The Trump administration on Wednesday granted TikTok owner ByteDance a seven-day extension on an order directing it to sell the video sharing platform.

According to a court filing spotted by Reuters, ByteDance now has until Dev. 4 to sell the U.S. portion of its app to a domestic company. Previously, President Donald Trump in November had given ByteDance an additional 15 days to divest the app -- a period that was set to expire on Friday, Nov. 27.

ByteDance also reportedly has a "new proposal" that's aimed at addressing U.S. government concerns, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters

TikTok is currently still in talks with Walmart and Oracle on a deal that would create a new U.S.-based company called TikTok Global.

Restrictions separate from the Trump Administration's ban have also been blocked by federal courts. In November, the Commerce Department placed a stay on an order that would effectively ban TikTok pending legal developments.

The "new proposal" is simply wait out the administration change.   The issue will quickly fade and be forgotten.

That's the smart thing for them to do.  A few injunctions should easily get them through the next few months, then we have a sane president again.

Your subtle distaste for the president aside, are you aware of what TikTok has been confirmed - by reverse engineering of their software - to be collecting about users?   Mostly minors?

What software do you think isn't collecting data about users? ← That's not rhetorical.  Seriously, Name any major software by any company that isn't hoovering customer data.  I'll save you some time, you won't be able to find any.  Hmmm, I guess that does kinda sorta make my question a bit rhetorical.

Regardless, Tik Tok's activity was never a national security issue.  Trump being embarrassed by some Tik Tok kids is definitely not a national security issue.  Ironically, using the power of the federal government to ineptly attempt to inflict petty vengeance on "those meddling kids" should be considered a national security issue.  Fortunately, it's all coming to an end soon.

They don’t have to issue them any more extensions. To hell with them.

Sounds like a plan to me. But now that Trump’s failed coup is burning in a dumpster outside a porn shop, he has lots of free time to focus on everything and everyone he feels has insulted him. The damage he could inflict between now and January 20th should not be underestimated.

The trick is distraction: something to take up his attention span. The kids on TikTok who made a fool of him before need to step up one last time. Start a fundraiser for Melania’s divorce.

That point can't be repeated often enough. Personal privacy is not the same thing as national security. Conflating the two is both bizarre and dangerous.

To those who think TikTok can simply run out the clock, that may be difficult to do for another 4 years.  Trump has not conceded and filed a lawsuit last evening in Georgia which if successful will flip Georgia and consequently prove a blueprint for flipping the other battleground states which went to Biden under suspicious circumstances.

Also, the urban legend that Trump is out to get TikTok supposedly because the attendance at his Tulsa rally was negatively influenced by TikTok users has got to be one of the more petulant conspiracy theories I've heard in quite awhile, and reflects more on those who make such an accusation rather than on POTUS himself.  So please, enough.
Bud I hate to tell you, but Trump doesn't have a chance in hell in flipping Georgia.  I live here.  It's pretty much an acknowledged done deal that he lost.  Trump got a hand recount and still lost by more than 12K votes.  He's not going to miraculously pick up 13K votes in an additional 2nd automated recount.  Fortunately for us, the process is being overseen by a Republican Sec. of State who values the rule of law over cult of personality.  Georgia isn't a blueprint for anything.  Circumstances aren't made suspicious by simply repeating that claim.  Requires proof.  Probably why more than 30 of those specious lawsuits have been laughed out of court.  Probably why he's slowly but surely (kicking and screaming baby-style all the way) cooperating with transition.

The only reason we're going through this theater in GA is the 2 Senate seats up for grabs in our state.  The party wants to concurrently energize and scare Republican voters into returning to the polls.  Everyone here already knows Trump lost Georgia... whether or not they publicly admit it is another story altogether.

Tik Tok kids dunked on Trump.  Trump got embarrassed and pissed, resulting in [insert air quotes] national security concerns.  Enough indeed.

He's focused on further bilking his supporters under the guise of investigating election fraud, all the while they're only paying money to lower his massive campaign debt.  He knows he lost, but the more the faithful contribute to "getting to the bottom of this", the more he gets rid of his campaign debt.  He's going to ride that dead horse for as long as possible, getting as much money as possible and probably try to declare another bankruptcy for whatever's left.
