As Wistron removes a vice president in charge of India amid its wage-related worker riot, Apple has put the assembly partner on probation until it can rectify the situation.

Saturday's riot at Wistron's iPhone production facility in Narasapura, India continues to cause problems for Wistron. Following the damage caused to the factory through the violence, as well as state authorities determining it had broken labor laws, Wistron now has to contend with a loss of income from its client, Apple.

In a statement received by the Hindustan Times, Apple says its employees and independent auditors have conducted an investigation into the facility. While the investigations are "ongoing," preliminary findings have uncovered violations of Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct, in that Wistron failed to "implement proper working hour management processes."

Assuring that it wanted to make sure "everyone in our supply chain is protected and treated with dignity and respect," Apple says it is "very disappointed," and is "taking immediate steps to address these issues." This includes Wistron taking disciplinary action, a restructuring of recruitment and payroll teams, and the setting up of an employee assistance program and grievance hotline.

Furthermore, Apple has "placed Wistron on probation," meaning it won't gain any new business from Apple until it performs "corrective actions" monitored by Apple and independent auditors.

In its own statement, Wistron said "Since unfortunate events at our Narasapura facility, we have found that some workers were not paid correctly, or on time. We deeply regret and apologize to all of our workers. Safety and well being of our team members is always our top priority and core value."

Wistron confirmed it was restructuring its teams, including the removal of its Vice President overseeing its operations in India.

The full statement from Apple follows:
Apple employees and independent auditors hired by Apple have been working around the clock to investigate the issues which occurred at Wistron's Narasapura facility. While these investigations are ongoing, our preliminary findings indicate violations of our Supplier Code of Conduct by failing to implement proper working hour management processes. This led to payment delays for some workers in October and November.

As always, our focus is on making sure everyone in our supply chain is protected and treated with dignity and respect. We are very disappointed and taking immediate steps to address these issues. Wistron has taken disciplinary action and is restructuring their recruitment and payroll teams in Narasapura. They have also set up an employee assistance program and a 24-hour grievance hotline in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, and English to ensure all workers at the facility can voice any concerns, anonymously.

We have placed Wistron on probation and they will not receive any new business from Apple before they complete corrective actions. Apple employees, along with independent auditors, will monitor their progress. Our main objective is to make sure all the workers are treated with dignity and respect, and fully compensated promptly.

Funny how Wistron claimed that the rioters were not their employees

Workers not being paid on time - or at all - is not a "mistake".  Whether it be the VP taking the fall, there were people up the ladder that did this and should be jailed.  It sounds like there were little to no consequence to those corrupt folks in management.

Apple should look elsewhere.  I wouldn't trust Wistron to do the right thing.

This is just typical everyday UPPER-CASTE bullsh*t. They never not respect the humanity and dignity of anyone consider lower than them. This crap has been playing out in India for eons.

Both Apple and Winstron should have known the abusive nature of the ingrained caste system that dominates the daily lives of India people. Knowing this, they should have made plans and put checks/balances in place to prevent this dehumanizing abuse and flat out wage theft that will always incite a violent response just out of frustration.

While I can’t condone the destruction of anyone’s property, stealing some one’s hard earned wages especially during a world wide pandemic is just plain mean and utterly despicable!

Why are they rewarding this behavior? So now they will think they can solve everything by using violence. What’s next, they riot because they didn’t get enough tea breaks?

Precisely.  This hereditary caste system ranks right up there with U.S. racism, except in India it seems to be more accepted to judge someone else's life and career by some b.s. hereditary nonsense.  I think there were a few people at that plant pulling that crap and they need to be not only fired, but jailed.  Better yet, those "upper caste" people need to be put in the same places as those lower-level folks they were discriminating against.  Shame on them.

Don't comment nonsense about a country without knowing da*n sh*t about it. This has nothing to do with Caste, either upper or lower. In fact over 50% of those workers would have been upper caste themselves. This is a simple worker-management problem caused by the fact that 90% of the employees at wistron are contract workers employed through employment agencies, and not permanent employees. Stop this propaganda bullsh*t that you are indulging in.

It worked in the U.S. -- that's where our unions came from:   Violence
In the Homestead Strike Frick brought in mercenaries who waged a gun battle with the workers where 16 died.

Those in with the power always abhor violence aimed at mitigating their abuse of that power.

Maybe the real issue is that you should not think that you and only you know all there is to know about India or about me! By the way you and another in this thread have responded,  I can presume (maybe wrongly but I doubt it) someone is sensitive to the subject of CASTE and thinks it okay condone STEALING from others than are so-called lessers humans beings because of their birth.

The only propaganda that is being spread here is your presumptions about me and the terrible explanation about the situation at the plant that was allowed to manifest which lead to a violent outburst and destruction of property. Although I can understand the anger and outburst, I can not condone it at all. This destruction no matter the cause will only lead to unemployment temporarily while the plant is being repaired and permanently if the plant is abandoned by Winston. Either way, it is only going to cause more economic suffering during a Pandemic.

Finally, you need to face the facts and stop making excuses for thieves who disregard Basic Rights and Respect due to all regard of their birth or station in life. Yeah WAGE  THEFT is basically thievery on the lowest level possible! With the exception of the last paragraph lets agreed to disagree on the above.

Well, the other person whom you are referring to is myself. Let me clarify - I have NOT even commented on this riot episode, since I haven't read enough information about it and detailed in-depth information related to this Incident is just NOT available in mainstream media for whatever reasons.

The part where myself and Sree take offense to is related to your posts about Caste system in India and the misinformation around it. Btw, I am from India and I presume Sree as well. You are just NOT well informed on this topic. Instead of repeating your presumptions about this repeatedly in multiple threads, it would be better if you come to India and spend few months to understand the reality. i am NOT saying that it is NOT an issue. The issue is there. But the extent of the issue is NOT as much as you exaggerate it to be.

In case you are wondering if I am from upper caste and a beneficiary of this by inflicting trouble on others, NO, I am NOT from upper caste. And I have NEVER been a victim/at the receiving end of ANY caste related issue for 40+ years, which is why I get irritated when you keep mentioning it as an issue in almost each and every thread. And again, caste has NOTHING to do with this Incident.

Sure, unlike the US's documented decades of slavery, discrimination, wars, coups, torture, prisons, tax abuse. It's not the same, but it's the same difference

And even though you China Haters consistently confuse allegations with evidence you continue with your unproven allegations while ignoring (in this case) the corruption and human rights abuses in those countries your leaders tell you to love.  For that matter, you even condone the human rights abuse going on in your own country.

The environment created by the discrimination of the caste system goes well beyond caste.  It enables abuses such as what these companies did.
Well there is no caste system in china, what's their excuse for abusing workers then?

You should ask Trump that question -- he's the one spouting that nonsense and stirring up the haters
Back to your bullshit. No, China’s decades of documented human rights violations that we have linked to you numerous times have jack shit to do with the current US administration. Please disclose your China interests.

We are talking about India --- but as always you China Haters have to try use every opportunity real and imagined to Hate on China.

And even though you China Haters consistently confuse allegations with evidence you continue with your unproven allegations while ignoring (in this case) the corruption and human rights abuses in those countries your leaders tell you to love.  For that matter, you even condone the human rights abuse going on in your own country.
Lol... "India extorts Apple" is EVIDENCE based claim because George said so in AI forum. China's human rights violations are also not true, because George said so in AI forum....There is absolutely NO need for George to provide ANY evidence for the claims that he makes. But if others provide details to the contrary, George won't even read/respond to those comments with counter arguments, rather that person will be labelled as "Chinese Hater", "Trumpian", "Right Wing extremist" by George because George is THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITY for Facts and George is THE ONLY person living in Fact based world. Everyone else is a Trumpian or Chinese Hater even if the person writes against Trump depending on the topic being debated. Your way of participating in arguments is NOT even funny.

    LOL...
So, because you don't know the history (or, more likely, choose to ignore it) means that history doesn't exist?   OK.....   That's typical.

And then you move immediately to:   "But China!"  (Which has apparently replaced "But the emails!"  because that dog whistle became so worn out and boring).
