People may not be leaving home as often as they used to but my dog still tries to run out to chase birds and squirrels so he’ll be the first of many anticipated use cases for me.
I'd like to get a good picture of where the cats go when they venture outside. Are they not coming back when I call them because they don't care (even if I have food) or are they so far away that they can't hear me? I assume it's the former, but I'd like to know for sure.
Silly hooman.  Of course I don't care.  You will feed me when I come back whether it's when you call or not.

I'm hoping there's a way to attach this unobtrusively to my bike.

That design can't be right. One side has to be flat to mount the tag to a surface.
From what I've seen from this common leak/mockup is that the metal side is flat and with a small lip so that that its edge cen hold many different type of 1st and 3rd part objects, like keychains, with ease.

I hope there is more to the AirTag than simply being a Tile competitor. There are now Bluetooth tags that have built in GPS receivers and talk to each other in a mesh network....
..... to send their locations and that's not being used by ground vehicles at airport, but these aren't small, inexpensive, or using BT.

They are larger, obviously. The point is that Bluetooth tags can do a lot more than ping their ID. Here is an example:
    https://www.digitalmatter.com/applications/bluetooth-asset-tracking/
So just to be clear, these conveniently-sized, unobtrusive devices are what you’re arguing as an alternative.

My cat isn’t going to wear that.

Mrs Ray2016 is not going to use that as a key fob.
    Get a bigger cat.

Being able to hide it under the seat or some place where it's not likely to be detected would be great.

Of course people will want to use it like that, but it's not really designed for it; instead you should get something more like: https://bikefinder.com/en.

With the right protection you'll even get a lower, or zero, deduction from the insurance company if your bike gets stolen.

That's a cool product. I assume there's an option with US coverage, if not from them a different vendor.

edit: This one says it's available in the US, too.

As Razorpit suggests, they might get Sherlocked by a good enough and cheaper product.

Looks like a cool idea. I'd be crapping bricks if I were them though. AirTags is going to put a sever hit on their revenue.

Neither of those displayed devices is usable on my bike, unfortunately.  At least not without modifying the way the gear shifters are attached and used.  I have a recumbent, with under seat steering, and the shifters are at the end of the steering yoke, right where these two devices would have to be inserted.  Might contact them and see if they have a solution for my bike.
