Why would I pay a VERY  premium price for a Hyundai chassis with an Apple logo on it?

I don’t know. It doesn’t sound like Apple to slap a body and some tech on top of someone else’s platform.
It will be pretty much like the Motorola Rokr at first. Apple has been working on separate components for a while now, like a very HQ car audio system being tested in Porsches atm. Safe self/autonomous driving will not be here for another 15-20 years, let alone allowed/working everywhere on the road. So going for small innovations to individual components sound smart while figuring out the market and awaiting progress. Other car makers do not seem interested in this so Apple has a play to integrate these components and figure out what a future car should be, instead of just being 'electric' and have 'assisted driving'.

Well, if true (I have my doubts) I would suspect there is more to it than that but I get your meaning.  I'd rather Apple went it alone.  They didn't get Moto or Blackberry to build their initial iPhone after all.  All the crap about car building experience 'that Apple doesn't have' seems to forget the vast amount of all that was gears and engines... combustion engines!

    Yup.

Prior to the new M1 Macs, there was little functional differents between a Mac and a PC. What really made the difference was external design and Mac OS? Apple's defining difference in the computer market was user experience. How different is that from what they are rumored to do for cars? Most people only care about what they can touch, see and feel. Only geeks and gear heads are going to care about performance specs. And cars are worse than computers. With computers, users will often hit the peak the performance of there computers. I have never driven faster than my car go.
This is a great observation.  (Prior to the M1) compare a MacBook Pro with any other quality laptop and they are 95% "the same" in terms of components.  And even with the M1 MacBooks, you could say this only shifts that slightly.  And yet, we swear by our Macs and say there is no comparison with PCs. Why would a car be any different?  This Hyundai E-GMP could be the "Intel inside" for the Apple Car and it wouldn't minimize the fact that it's an Apple car.  If Hyundai has nailed the basic "electric car stuff" so that it's zippy with great range, then Apple could build on this and (theoretically) be competitive with anyone.  It would be insane for Apple to try to reinvent the wheel at the level of transmissions, tires, suspension, etc.

310 miles?? 0-60 in 3.5?? how the f are they supposed to compete with tesla? they should just buy lucid already, who also has a factory and is really close to production of their luxury product.
LOL.  0-60 in under 4 seconds is way more performance than anyone needs.  Are we expecting Joe Commuter to compete in F1 races now?

“We’ve learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,” he said. “PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They’re not going to just walk in.”  Here we go again.

Don't want a car from Kia?  You are buying computers and phones made by Pegatron and Hon Hai Precision Industry?  (Who?)  Kia's quality is good with their own badge on it and it will surely be better to get Apple's badge on it.  I also like the idea that there would be some standard assemblies on it so it could be
repaired by someone other than an Apple specialist repair shop and there's a good chance for quality aftermarket parts.

Hyundai says they will be making 23 different vehicles using the E-GMP base. Certainly makes sense that a Kai for Apple Car might be one of those.

As for a premium price, that might be true, but a high price for a form factor. If we look at Apple's computer products, they are premium priced but with a wide range of prices. So, being premium will not necessarily mean unaffordable. It will depend on what form factor you want or need.

If so, Apple is treating a car like a phone; get the screen from Samsung, the cellular modem from Qualcomm, etc.

In this case you’re not really getting an Apple Car, but a branded Kia with CarOS.

I’m not saying this leads to a bad product at all, but it doesn’t make me excited for the brand and have respect for building a car company from the ground up, like Tesla has been doing. They’ve created their own factories, their own production tech and processes, their own battery tech, chips and software.

Feels like Apple tried to do this but failed and are now going for a different strategy, which is completely dull and uninspiring.

That said - rumors! We don’t know anything for sure yet.
Agreed. They can't farm out the design and manufacture of parts that make a car a car to whoever makes the cheapest and then put an Apple logo on it and expect to charge a premium.

I had a Ford Escape once, and while it was dependable and functional, every part inside looked like it came from a different supplier (plastics with different colours and textures that were supposed to the the same), so it oozed a car designed around manufacturing efficiency not driver satisfaction. Apple's strength is in the integration of all the components by controlling the design and manufacturing process (even of the manufacturing is subbed out). Just changing a few side panels on a Kia and putting apple software in it means they completely miss the point of why one buys a premium car. I'll keep my EV Jag, thank you very much and plug in my iPhone to the dash to fix the software.

Everyone made or makes negative comments against Apple's strategic direction, products including Car; remember there are and were millions like you and almost every time; Apple delivered without saying in your face. Until that day, enjoy your sarcasm. For Apple, Car is different than small consumer products but knowing Apple; if Apple decided to build car than it will be their like iPhone,iPad,M1 MAC,etc.

I think, that the Apple’s decision about with which car companies will go or will not go collaborate, is not the the most important factor for Apple to succeed.
The most important factor for Apple to succeed is the answer of the question: Does AppleCar has a breakthrough future, which it doesn’t exist yet by the cars of the traditional car manufacturers, just like the first iPhone has had a breakthrough future never seen before by the phones of the phone makers at that time.

This is Apple we are talking about.  When have they ever done anything the same as anyone else?  Think about it; the iPod, iPhone and iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods all took the basic idea and transformed it into something brilliant.
With a car, there are components, design and build. EV components are very different than for regular cars.  Apple have demonstrated the ability to think outside the box with battery design. Electric motors are highly reliable and efficient.  Energy recovery is also well established now.
The design is the key for Apple.  We have all seen how they reinvented phones in a way no one ever considered.  Their build quality is still the best in the world and they use the same factories that competitors use.
The scale its different, which can be challenging, but Apple have the experiencing working with manufacturers and supply chain for making millions of units a month.

I think they can pull it off and it would be just like Apple to have the competition open up the market like Tesla has for them to swoop in and show them how it is done.

Now everything makes sense. As I said in previous posts: any Apple car would be just a Kia with a Apple skin.

Well, even if Apple had started to work on a chassis 5 years ago, any Hyundai chassis in the next 15 years would still be superior to any chassis comnig from Apple in the next 10 years.

Some Apple fans believe that alone working for Apple would compensate the missing knowledge and experience in any other industry.

The same goes for design and room/space concepts: there is nothing that has not been showcased by traditional car manufacturers in their futuristic prototypes.

Patenting existing concepts from other car makers is not enough to become a successful car maker.

Apple will likely market the vehicle as a "very high-end" model, or "significantly higher" than a standard electric vehicle.
This is ominous. A "standard" EV is about 40k. Tesla Model 3/Y base model. Chevy Bolt. Nissan Leaf with options. If it's >60k, not many will be able to afford it.

Choosing E-GMP as basis for their own car wouldn‘t be the worst option. According to industry experts Hyundai Motor Group build a state of the art platform with quite ambitious global sales targets. But it makes me wonder, how Apple will successfully compete with e.g. the first model based on this platform to be released this month? It‘s called IONIQ 5 and including not only sophisticated and innovative features, but also has a very distinctive high end design competing in the mass segment: teaser info including pictures has been published recently and according to initial reception in social media this could be a game changer. In some sense I can understand the doubts raised by Hyundai Management regarding becoming the foxconn of auto industry instead of looking forward to reap investment by having an excellent competitor in the BEV market... just my 2 cents ;-)

If you head on over to any of the Tesla... sorry EV forums there are endless debates about specs, especially the 0-60mph times. Come in even 0.00001 seconds behind a Tesla and your car will be slagged off as DOA (or worse). 4.7 secs is fine for me but the new king on the block is the updated Model S (1.9secs). Any Apple badged car will be compared in every little detail with a Tesla. Even if the fit and finish are far, far better, if the specs are worse then the crowing from the Teslarti will be as loud as a Heavy Metal band with the volume set to 20.
Journo's will come in on the back of that and make sure that their darling Tesla is far, far better than this upshot Apple and the negative reviews will flow.
make no mistake, the Tesla disciples will do their utmost to make Apple's entrance into the EV world as difficult as they possibly can. This is just what they do to all makes but they'll really want to put the boot in on Apple.
