'AirTags' & new iPad Pro still on track for March release, leaker says

A prolific leaker says that the long-awaited "AirTags" tracking devices have not seen any further delays, and are expected to launch in March along with a refreshed iPad Pro.

Apple's holiday quarter was one of its busiest and most successful quarters to date. The company is not done, however, as more new products are set to launch in the early Spring.

In a brief tweet on Friday, Jon Prosser said that the "AirTags" are "still on" for a March release. Prosser has a good track record for predicting product release dates so far.

AirTags are still on for March.

Haven't heard of any further delays this time.

Fans responded to his tweet with follow-up questions about other expected products such as the iPad Pro. He said the new iPad Pro is also set for March "as far as I know."

Information about the "AirTags" has been leaked multiple times over the past 18 months. Prosser and other leakers have suggested the product is "ready to go" and Apple seemingly held back its release due to the ongoing pandemic.

Based on data mining out of iOS itself, "AirTags" are expected to be a device tracker that will use Apple's crowdsourced Find My app to locate devices.

Likely in order to avoid antitrust concerns, Apple recently updated Find My to allow third-party devices to take advantage of the system. A set of earbuds from Belkin are the first known devices to use the system.

The next iPad Pro is not well defined as of yet. Rumors suggest it will include support for 5G and use mini LED instead of LCD. Apple will also include updated processors, likely an upgraded A14 processor.

Prosser was also asked about the next iPhone. One person asked if the "iPhone Fold" would release in 2022, to which he responded simply "no."

Another person asked about Touch ID returning to the main iPhone lineup, and Prosser says "yep." It is expected the "iPhone 13" will have either Touch ID in the side button like on iPad Air 4, or Touch ID under the display. The new technology would be used alongside Face ID and the new unlock with Apple Watch feature being introduced in iOS 14.5.

As always, leaks can be hit and miss regardless of who is reporting them. Prosser has good connections within Apple pertaining to release dates, but launch windows can move at a moment's notice. Part shortages or even the pandemic could cause new products to be delayed yet again before the March event.

I’ve been waiting to dump my Tile products for quite some time. Now I have the perfect reason to do so next month.

Why do you want to dump them? Are they not working as you’d hoped?

This ‚leaker‘ already announced the airtags would be available in November 2020. He also was wrong with many iPhone predictions as far as I remember.

If you fire a lot, you probably hit some target, eventually.

    What about iPhone SE 3?
You mean the iPhone 12 mini?

    Names change, positioning doesn’t.
There’s no point getting hung up on a name.
Positioning is decided by products management, naming is decided by marketing.
Product management deciding they need an iPhone SE replacement doesn’t mean marketing will name the resulting product iPhone SE.
If your leak is from product management, you may hear about a new iPhone SE, which may never hit the market under that name. That doesn’t mean the leak was inaccurate, it just means marketing decided on a different name.

Likely in order to avoid antitrust concerns, Likely in order to make their platform more appealing to customers and thereby increase sales, Apple recently updated Find My to allow third-party devices to take advantage of the system.

    There, fixed that for ya.

Go, go, go, iPad Pro 12.9 update. Hoping for miniLED, M1, 8/16 GB RAM, Smart Connector with TB/USB functionality, TB/USBC port, extended desktop external monitor support, Terminal.app, page file turned on, and an untold number of software updated I'd like to see.

If they put TouchID on the side button then that means you can’t use a case. Has to go under the display.

“use mini LED instead of LCD“. Mini LED is a LCD with a miniLED backlight in my understanding.

An iPad Pro that was also a Mac Tablet would be a total "must buy" device. I can't think of a single more desirable device that Apple could produce today.

Yes me too. My 10.5 is over three years old now. Time to move it to a secondary role and upgrade my road unit.. I'm really wanting the 12" screen and an ApplePencil 2. One thing I will do is go with the smallest onboard storage. I keep everything in the cloud so I discovered I really don't need much locally. I do agree with more RAM. I'm seeing soe odd behavirs that suggest to me that it's a bit tight at times.

Jon “poser” seems to get most all predictions “so called leaks” wrong. I would bet against him each time...
