Zuckerberg wants to 'inflict pain' on Apple for privacy changes

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly been angered by Apple CEO Tim Cook's comments about the social network and privacy, which has allegedly led to animosity between the two company chiefs.

Apple is well known as a tech giant attempting to ensure users retain an element of privacy in their digital lives. With initiatives such as iOS 14's App Tracking Transparency on the way, even more attention has been brought to the concept.

However, while Facebook is publicly attacking Apple's privacy initiatives, a profile into the spat between the two tech titans hints it has rumbled along for a few years already.

During the Cambridge Analytica scandal in 2018, Tim Cook offered comments about the matter that Zuckerberg thought were "extremely glib" and "not at all aligned with the truth," reports the Wall Street Journal.

Behind closed doors, Zuckerberg allegedly wanted to bring Apple down a peg, supposedly telling his team "we need to inflict pain" to the iPhone maker. This wasn't the only time that Zuckerberg objected to Cook's commentary, with it reoccurring as time moved on.

In the latest incarnation of the inter-company disagreement, Zuckerberg accused Apple of interfering with how Facebook apps work with its privacy changes. In response, Cook condemned "conspiracy theories juiced by algorithms" without mentioning Facebook, but still heavily inferring in its direction.

People familiar with Zuckerberg reportedly believe the Facebook chief is taking Apple's attacks against the company personally.

Despite the very public attacks against each other, Facebook spokeswoman Dani Lever insists the arguments are not personal in nature. Rather they are "about the future of the free Internet."

"Apple claims this is about privacy, but it's about profit, and we're joining others to point out their self-preferencing anti-competitive nature," Lever added.

Apple and Tim Cook have long held the stance that "the customer is not our product." Its business model doesn't depend on data collection and advertising, making it much easier for Apple to maintain that stance than the advertising-supported Facebook.

Currently, Facebook is simultaneously giving in to Apple's inbound policy changes regarding ad tracking, as well as fighting the company. Facebook is said to be preparing an antitrust lawsuit against Apple over the matter, at the same time as running a marketing campaign against the measures.

The board should pay attention, these kinds of directives don't usually align with growth.

Given the chairman of the board is person making the comments I don’t imagine they care.

In most companies the board can replace the chairman with cause. In this case I think Z still holds a majority of the stock so it would be tougher to do. However Z has been becoming increasingly erratic and shrill. IMO he is just one perceived personal slight away from doing something really damaging to the company. He's never been a great businessman, just lucky and unethical. At some point that's going to catch up to him.

This explains his decision to release a product to “compete” with Apple Watch. Oh, the pain!

good luck with that. it is little more than an ad-ridden opinion column that scrolls. I am certain apple has 100 other things to think about.

I use Facebook because it lets me keep in touch with friends and family and I'm in a number of FB groups. It's definitely convenient, and I'm fully aware that I AM THEIR PRODUCT. That's the evil genius of Facebook. That being said, my wish is that Facebook is forced to break up; divest from Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, etc. And honestly, while I use it every day, if Facebook were to fold, I would not shed any tears. It would be tougher to get in touch with a lot of far-flung friends though...

Facebook is in a slow death spiral.  They just don’t know it, or aren’t talking about it. Young people increasingly don’t use Facebook, at least in the U.S.  Many millennials and gen xers (I’m the latter) are jumping ship ((also me).  While their worldwide numbers are going up, they aren’t replacing users with enough of the next generation.  Kids my daughter’s age (around 18) don’t use it.  That means they have a to maximize revenue per user and look to Asia and other markets for growth.  There is also a growing political movement to go after Big Tech on censorship, anti-trust, breach of contract and fraud claims.  Twitter and Facebook are at the top of the list.  Google and Amazon are next.  Apple will likely escape, but it depends on the winds of change re: the App Store.

It’s concerning how the FBI, Epic, and Facebook want a say in how Apple runs its business.
iPhone has 20% market share, not a monopoly, yet here we are.
Although these anti Apple marketing campaigns don’t have a leg to stand on, they do help tarnish the brand. All are leveraging it to their advantage.

Yes, but I’m guessing you haven’t looked at the brain trust that is the Facebook board of directors.

Would an alternative such as MeWe be usable instead?

Because these entities feel threatened that Apple is sincerely interested in keeping their users lives PRIVATE.

OMG! What will Apple do when Facebook users deprived of ads for dick pills revolt, burn their iPhones and buy Facebook phones on eBay?

Wow, The irony here. Facebook is about making profits from being insecure, and sure, Apple is making profits about being secure. Who would I rather trust here? I think the choice is rather obvious!  :D :D
