Missing HD icon

I have a simple question, I think… After much research, I can not resolve this simple problem.

I've just replaced my older Mac with a new iMac running Big Sur. The Macintosh HD icon I'm used to seeing on the desktop is no longer there, and I can't access it anywhere. Will someone enlighten me as to where to find it?

My external hd does not appear under 'devices' in the finder, either. Not sure if this is related.

Thank you!

Go to Finder >Finder Menu > Preferences > General

Then check whatever you want to show on the desktop

If you go to Sidebar in the Preferences you'll be able to set External Disks to show in Finder too.

Thank you! Simple, as I suspected.

Perhaps you can help me with one more easy question. How do I add the '# of items' to my folders (it appears at the bottom of each folder when set properly.) I've tried every place I can think of to find the option for this. Thanks again.

Sounds like your status bar is hidden.  Try pressing ⌘ and /

Yes, it was off. What's the status bar? That didn't solve the problem -I still don't see how many items are in a folder I opened. (I have to grab and deposit it somewhere to see what I'm dealing with.)
