Apple's CarPlay received chiefly cosmetic updates in iOS 14, but one new driving-related function was the addition of speed camera alerts. Previously available in selected countries including the US and the UK, the feature has now begun rolling out across the Netherlands and Belgium.

According to local publication iCulture, the new feature is live and means (in translation) that "with an icon you can see where the speed camera is while navigating."

"Apple is working on a function to report speed cameras and more for Apple Maps," it continues, "but that is not yet visible in the Netherlands." At present, then, it's showing only fixed speed cameras and not any mobile installations.

The latest version of CarPlay did also add one other driving-related feature. In combination, Apple Maps and Siri, drivers can automatically share their ETA with any of their contacts.

Update: The feature has also been spotted in Australia, Austria, Brazil, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and Taiwan.

A very irresponsible action from Apple stimulating car drivers to ignore maximum speed limits.

I wonder about that.  After a few of those warnings, I'd probably just stay slowed down if I were exceeding the limit.  I wonder if there is any data on that sort of thing.  Many States in the US used to allow devices for detecting speed traps, some didn't. I haven't heard much about it let alone seen such things for years.

Apple needs to have this on Maps when you are just free driving (not having your destination entered). Why only when using directions?

This has existed for a long time, much before Apple Maps or Google Maps was a thing. Physical Navigation systems in cars had this feature long ago.

Given that speed traps are often more about generating revenue for the given municipality than about actual safety, I consider the various navigation applications' inclusion of these warnings to be quite responsible.
