This may be why Apple's Weather app doesn't show 69-degree temperatures

The conversion explanation is a good one. I know the USA is largely and invisibly metric, except for mapping and such, but I rarely encounter Celsius. I hadn’t considered that the weather services might be using it behind the scenes and converting for Fahrenheit using Americans, but it makes sense. That’s how a lot of things are actually done (using the better system behind the scenes, and converting for end users and the bulk of society that refuses to adapt).

The fact that some users see 69° suggests what I’ve guessed for some time: Apple uses more than one data source for weather info. Weirdly, it seems to differ from widget to app, and from OS to OS (which you can see when multiple devices and apps/widgets show different values at the same time).

Why? Is this a geo~political issue for you?

This entire article is a big nothing, but not at all surprising that some people wish to question if there is some conspiracy involved. Simple mathematics/ rounding. Anyone painting it as something else should consider psychiatric help.

What a sad state of the human condition when people complain about some temperature numbers not displaying.  Seriously.  Is this part of the new "woke" fad?
What a sad state of the human condition when people reach this far to blame a social equity movement for something that has nothing to do with it.
It is absolutely fathomable that a "social equity movement" as you call it could twist, distort and try to make something out of nothing. We read of multiple instances of it everyday. Besides, if you read the statement in detail you will comprehend that is a secondary part of his comment. He is right. It is reflects a sad state when people care about a number not displaying and suggest some conspiracy might be in play. In the secondary comment he asks if "the new woke fad." Given the behavior, broad swipes and distortion surrounding many things labeled woke or social equity, his question is quite reasonable. You've even invented a term for it “social equity" when what you really mean is making others conform to a society you believe is just regardless of their view or lack of agreement. Cancel everything and everyone that doesn’t fit the woke mold.

I wonder why they would choose to use the rounded Celsius for the calculation and not wait to round it until the value is displayed. The Weather Channel app shows values not in that chart.

Growing up in the US I tend to think in English imperial units for day to day stuff but I would never use anything else than the SI system in a physics or engineering calculation. The only time I use English units in engineering is when doing PCB layout since there is a convention of using mils. I was amazed that NASA used in English units for the crashed Mars Climate Lander in 1999.

No one cares about it. Some people are amused by the suggestion. And crucially it isn’t true. Apple are not blocking the number 69 out of prudishness and it has nothing to do with being woke.  It’s math.

The only reason some people see conspiracy is because they’re fed false conspiracies on a daily basis by dubious sources.

Isn’t that a little bit like saying that Europe should drive on the right side of the road?
We use a mix of both, and it suits us just fine.

Well they fixed it in iOS 15. Saw 69 yesterday.

Somewhat related, though not as funny, is why on earth there is no Weather App for the iPad. Boggles the mind.
Yes! And why no calculator app, either?

If a conversion rounding error is what’s happening I think it depends on how the data is being downloaded. If it’s being rounded/truncated to the nearest whole degree then it could easily occur. If they are downloading in tenths of a degree or even half degrees then the conversion would hit every whole degree Fahrenheit.

It’s more like Europe saying England should drive on the left side of the road, and there are very real reasons to convert - aside from the metric system being infinitely easier to learn and use, it makes international commerce much easier. As a practical matter, most manufacturing already happens in metric anyway.

A great example of how much the English system ‘costs’ occurred 20 years ago when NASA lost a Mars spacecraft due to a metric conversion error. $125M crashed onto the surface of Mars because of it. https://www.simscale.com/blog/2017/12/nasa-mars-climate-orbiter-metric/

At least since the late 50s, when the yard was officially defined as some fraction of a meter.

Funny... I started using Dark Sky because Apple's weather app forecasts were a total joke. Dark Sky was freakishly reliable and became my the only weather app I needed. Then Apple bought them and forecast reliability has gone down hill ever since, and now we're back to joke status. In fact, forget forecast reliability: I can't tell you how often Dark Sky is wrong about the weather happening right now. RIP for a once great weather app... in a way, it's best that Apple kill off the name entirely, lest someone confuse it with a weather app that used to be fantastic.

This makes sense and it’s hilarious that people thought it was because Apple didn’t want to show the number 69  :D

You guys in the USA are hilarious.

The U.K.* already drives on the left.
Just like the majority of Europe already drives on the right.
You both asked for changes that that are impossible because that’s already how things are…

*Not forgetting your poor geographic grasp of saying England when you mean U.K…. Which is as ridiculous as someone using “Alaska” and “USA” interchangeably.

I don’t believe it is a conversion issue.  All weather models give temperature output in tenths of degrees Celsius.  It would be a serious programming error to first round Celsius to whole units and then do the conversion.

This is really tiresome, you know? Are there tiresome people who take "wokeness" to a tiresome extreme? You betcha. It's even more tiresome, the people who have made that and other related concepts into full-on boogeymen (boogeypersons?), seeing it everywhere where it actually isn't, so that they can play the enraged victim. These things are just wedge issues that Machiavellian political operatives cook up to invigorate voting blocs. It's a crass manipulation. They elevate marginal cultural irritants to become enraging focal points that motivate some voters to look past more important things to act and vote in ways that, in a more rational calculus, would not be in their self-interest. As a result, we have groups of people who profess that they're pro Constitution, police, the flag and law-and-order, literally using the flag to beat police into submission in an effort to stop a fundamental constitutional process because they're worked up about "wokeness" and such.

It's in this context that a likely mathematical anomaly becomes a Beavis and Butthead level joke and then transmogrifies into an enraging cultural issue that doesn't even track, logically. If the "69F" was being officially avoided because of a prurient concern, the "woke" people -who are all about sexual liberation- would be against hiding that number, not for it. So reactionaries claiming it's some sort of "woke" conspiracy aren't even making sense in the context of the dreaded "wokeness." They're actually on the same side as the "woke" people. "Don't censor the 69!" they would all say in agreement, if they weren't so focused on creating enemy straw men. Meanwhile, the whole tempest in a teapot is all about nothing, because it's most likely the result of a mathematical artifact from converting scales and rounding up. Tiresome, you know?

The yard is pegged to the meter, but Fahrenheit and Celsius scales are both fixed to the freezing and boing points of water at standard atmospheric pressure. So while the conversion calculation from one to the other is direct, neither is technically "first."

Fahrenheit is not generally considered part of the imperial system, except sometimes as a matter of categorisation convenience.  It's an outlier.   :p

yards are defined in terms of metres
pounds are defined in terms of kilograms
pints are defined in terms of litres
