On Thursday, DigiTimes reported that Apple supply partners are providing mini LED backlight units for both upcoming MacBook Pro models and a new iPad mini device, likely the "iPad mini 6."

A paywalled preview of the DigiTimes report indicates that Radiant Optoelectronics will begin shipping the backlight units in the third quarter of 2021, with a volume expansion planned for the fourth quarter.

Compared to traditional backlight methods, mini LEDs provide better contrast, higher brightness levels, and improved black colors.

Back in 2020, TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo forecast that a new iPad mini model would come equipped with mini LED backlighting. Earlier in July, Bloomberg reported that the "iPad mini 6" was set for a launch in the fall.

In June, leaked renders of the "iPad mini 6" showed off a device with slim bezels and no home button like other current iPad models. On Tuesday, a report indicated that the new iPad mini would use the same A15 chipset as Apple's "iPhone 13" lineup.

With the increased screen size rumored to be up to 8.4", I will seriously consider this as a replacement for my 9.7" Pro.
I'll have to do side-by-side comparison in person. Can't wait to see what is eventually delivered.

calling bullshit on this one. Mini LEDs were either too expensive or too supply-constrained (or both) to make it in both models of the iPad Pro. They won't make it this far downmarket for years.

In fact, I'm skeptical that all of this fall’s Macbook Pro models will have them. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was some kind of $300 upsell (which I will of course happily shell out for).

    Completely agree with paragraph 1.

And me too for paragraph 2.

I’ll be happy if a new iPad mini shows up at all this year. That’s not a high hurdle to overcome. Some of these recent rumors are setting expectations for a product that’s been begging for an update for years so unrealistically high. If they all arrive, that’ll be gravy, but Apple needs to deliver a real product even if it’s not a Nirvana breed of unicorn.
