IMDb TV streaming service launches iOS, Android apps

IMDb TV, IMDb's free, ad-supported streaming service, is now available for iOS and Android mobile devices.




On Tuesday, IMDb launched two mobile apps for Apple and Android devices, allowing users to watch ad-supported movies and TV shows from their iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

According to Variety, the IMDb TV app launched in 2021 on myriad other devices, including Roku, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Android TV devices that include Chromecast with Google TV, LG Smart TV, and the Playstation 4.

The service originally launched in January 2019 as "IMDb Freedive," but was later rebranded to "IMDb TV." To date, the programming has been served inside Amazon's app, versus Thursday's standalone versions.

The streaming service, owned by Amazon, features a regularly updated catalog of TVs and Movies. Available titles include "Mad Men," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Chicago Fire," and "The Wolf of Wall Street." There is also a growing collection of exclusive IMDB TV Original titles, similar to Netflix Originals or Apple TV+ exclusives.

    Oh boy, another streaming service. How long till the big shakeout? Kinds makes one want to rethink the ‘cut the cord’ option.

    "Be careful what you wish for" comes to mind. Eventually it'll be cheaper to just stuck with cable.

    The Bosch spinoff is going to be on IMDb. The original Bosch series was on Amazon. Looking forward to seeing!

    The iPhone app is terrible. 

    No search field…
    No watch list/favorites section…
    No “recently viewed” section…
    These are basic features that most people have come to expect in the streaming age. 

    No AirPlay…
    No Apple TV (app or box) support…
    These are basic features that most Apple users have come to expect. 

    Basically, if you want to watch more than 1 episode of a show, or come back to finish a movie later…you have to remember where it was in the vast library of content and then navigate back to it manually each time. That might not seem like a big deal, but it will get old quickly.
