Apple releases macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 to the public

Apple has released macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 with bug fixes.

The new macOS update will automatically download and install for users who have that option enabled. Users can also navigate to System Preferences to initiate the update manually.

Like the macOS 11.5.1 update in July, this update has arrived without a beta period for testing. Apple only lists bug fixes in the update description.

At this time, it is unclear exactly what the new build offers, outside a maintenance and compatibility release. Given that macOS 11.5.1 was a maintenance release, and that macOS Monterey is currently being beta-tested, it seems unlikely that there will be major changes in the build.

Hopefully it fixes the bug where I can’t  access my Epson scanner through the Preview app anymore. I’ve already updated to latest Epson drivers and firmware.

Epson customer service might be a good option.

Hi! I had issues with my Epson scanner, until I realized that the MacOS Image Capture app doe sit all without the Epson softwares. Please give it a try, and let us know if it works, or not.

And yes, you can scan directly into Preview from the menu, choose File > Import from Scanner > [scanner]
Apple help: "Scan a document or image in Preview on Mac"

That’s what I always used, I didn’t realize you could even scan directly into Preview.

That said, I wonder if my 20-something yo Epson scanner still works with my Mac. I think I’ll check today. :)

Since Apple is turning iOS into a platform spying their paying users I will wait until the content of this update is disclosed before installing it...

Don’t want to be scanned for kiddie porn? Don’t opt in for iCloud Photos. An external hard drive or two can suffice.

It is an Apple problem: Brother and HP printer/scanners have the same problem since 11.5.1. I was able to fix it using terminal on 1 machine which was upgraded from 11.5 to 11.5.1 but not another which was a clean 11.5.1 install. In the original config on that machine with the clean install I went from 10.14->11 (all released versions)->11.5.1 and it never showed the problem in the first place.

Seems a little naive that the richest tech company in the world doesn't already spy on the contents of your hard-drives, when they're plugged in.  Or photos on your iOS devices, whether they're marked for cloud storage or not.  Makers and traffickers of kiddie porn and other abominable visual content, and myriad other heinous commerce enabled by the internet, should be prosecuted and jailed, and I trust actual law enforcement authorities to do it right; but I certainly don't trust any corporation, of any political leaning or do-gooding posture, to do the police's work for them.  And if you think that this is just a private company trying to help democratic law enforcement do its job, think for a minute about what other countries where Apple does massive business – like the largest, most authoritarian country of them all, China – consider to be criminal behavior.  People are going to jail in China simply for saying that Hong Kong should secede and pointing out that Uighurs are being treated like Jews were in Nazi Germany.  Is Apple going let Chinese authorities spy on Apple customers for crimes against that state?  And if/when MAGA takes over our government and enacts its openly-professed agenda of putting those not loyal to the Big Liar in jail (or lynching them, as they planned to do in D.C. on Jan. 6) is Apple going to help them round up such "enemies of the people"?  The day I hear Apple take a hard stand against savage repression in China is the day I would consider trusting them to arbitrate whether my devices' memory hold criminal content.

I thought I was reading a technical article about a macOS update and suddenly all the posts are about politics and social issues.

    WTF?

Are you all so starved for attention and somewhere to spew your grievances that you have to politico-bomb every friggin Apple Insider article with the same old BS no matter how innocuous or unrelated the article is?

    No. Don’t do it.

AppleInsider provides plenty of opportunities for venting non technical grievances. Most of those articles have social relevance and at least a thin Apple connection. But an OS update thread? No.

There’s a time and a place for the kind of dialogue that’s at the forefront of so many people’s attention  these days. Ideally the place is somewhere else, like Reddit,  but sometimes Apple Insider does provide the appropriate forum for Apple relevant social matters. This isn’t one of those.

    Give it a break, please.

FUD is a technique that has proven useful time and again to destabilize and harm otherwise legitimate endeavours. Pedophiles enjoy using this strategy right now against Apple’s attempt at finding them, as they attempt to continue hiding.

Normal people are not stressed out by this benign use of AI, so pedophiles try to make them panic by conflating various subjects under this heading. We are seeing one of these exaggerations in action here.

If you’re that worried about a minor release fixing bugs, you should probably try the other smartphone platform. Sounds like it’s a better fit for you.

It’s probably a problem with your router settings… I bought a new Brother printer and couldn’t use AirPrint or scan wirelessly to my Mac.
issues is a router setting called ‘airtime fairness’ - on my Asus router it’s under the wireless tab, and disabling it fixed it all ( and has fixed a Sonos network issue for others ), so give that a try.

I usually use the image capture app also.
