Apple's new Siri Remote for Apple TV gets firmware update

Apple on Tuesday released a firmware update for its new Siri Remote for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, likely delivering bug fixes and performance improvements to the device.

Pushed out alongside fresh betas of iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and tvOS 15, the latest Siri Remote firmware bears an internal version number of 9M6772, reports MacRumors.

The previous Siri Remote firmware version was 9M6336.

Apple does not specify what changes accompany the new firmware iteration, but it appears that the remote functions normally with no additional features or user interface tweaks. The update likely delivered the usual bug fixes and various performance improvements contained in a typical maintenance release.

Apple also fails to specify how users can update their Siri Remote to the latest firmware version, though the process is likely similar to other accessories that carry out the process automatically. AirPods, for example, download and install updates in the background with no option to manually force the operation.

Apple introduced the new Siri Remote with Apple TV 4K and sixth-generation Apple TV HD at its Spring Loaded media event in April.

A departure from its predecessor, the second-generation Siri Remote swaps out the controversial track pad for a touch-enabled clickpad that features a large button encricled by an outer ring with directional buttons. On the side is a dedicated button to invoke Siri, while a separate buttons on the remote's face control device power and mute functions.

    My guess, is that their suggestion, is right. It will happen in the background.

    Yes but how do you know it's been applied? Mine shows version 0x0060. I'm guessing with a number that low it hasn't been upgraded but that's still a guess.

    Same here, firmware version 0x0060, nothing like the version numbers reported in this article. Yet another mystery we will likely never figure out. Apple and its cryptic way of doing things, no information, no details, no time table for the update, nothing.

    "Apple today released a new firmware update for the Siri Remote designed for the new Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD models. The new firmware has an internal version number of 9M6772, while the prior firmware version was 9M6336. Note that this is not the firmware version that you see in the Apple TV Remote settings."

    Both ours say 0x0061. Note they were purchased at an Apple Store last Saturday (August 14), so it’s possible they came with this version installed already. I didn’t check earlier, so I can’t say for sure.

    As usual I guess we’ll just sit and wait to see what happens. No details, no information, no rollout schedule, no nothing. Then the Apple Discussion Forums will start loading up with questions like, “Does it fix...?" to which there are no answers except that it will happen sometime...maybe.

    Mine has gone from 0x0060 to 0x0061 so 9M6772 should = 0x0061

    I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have two of these and both constantly lose and regain connection to ATV. The little bug appears in upper right of screen each time it happens. I have to frequently re-pair the remote to regain control. Certainly hoping a firmware update resolves this.
