Apple will fix iPhone 13 'Unlock with Apple Watch' soon

After a few days of silence, on Sunday Apple confirmed that the iPhone 13 "unlock with Apple Watch" feature will be fixed with a software patch.

A support document published Sunday confirms that the issue is limited to the iPhone 13 family. Apple's text is clear that the issue is limited to some iPhone 13 users only.

"Apple has identified an issue where Unlock with Apple Watch may not work with iPhone 13 devices," Apple said in the support document. "You might see 'Unable to Communicate with Apple Watch' if you try to unlock your iPhone while wearing a face mask, or you might not be able to set up Unlock with Apple Watch."

The text goes on to say that it will be fixed in software. It doesn't address specifically when, which is also addressed by first reporter MacRumors

User Monzilla88 on Reddit first reported the issue to the subreddit r/AppleWatch on Friday. They state that both their iPhone 13 Pro and Apple Watch SE are up to date with the newest iOS and watchOS updates.

The initial claimant said that they had tried unpairing and repairing, hard resetting both devices, turning on and off passcodes but with no success. Ultimately, more users reported that they too had attempted what the initial reporter had tried, and more, with no successes.

"Unlock with Apple Watch" continues to work fine on iOS 15 on older models of iPhone, including the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the iPhone X. Conversations about it have escalated on the Apple Support forums since the Friday report as well, as more users have received iPhone 13 orders.

Glad they acknowledged the issue.  Got my 13 Pro Max going yesterday and immediately noticed that it won't unlock with apple watch.  Get a message that it can't communicate with the watch.

Hi all, please try doing this which works for me.  Back up your iphone, do a factory reset of your iPhone, restore your iphone data from your back up.  After everything has been restored, try turning on the “unlock with Apple Watch” feature again.  It should work as i just did mine and it works like a charm now.  Thanks and good luck.  There is no need to wait for apple for a resolution.

    Youch. . .

Just did that when my new phone arrived. Not prepared to wait another day for 150gig+ backup and login to various apps over again to see if it fixes it.

There’s obviously a bug in the software.  Mine was initially working with 13 Pro Max after back up, but then a day later it stopped.

I will admit that this is one of the best features they implemented with the Apple Watch as it saves countless daily password entering.

    I’ll wait for a update.

    Really?

The feature being discussed, that isn't working, is when an iPhone (not Mac) will not unlock with an Apple Watch, when FaceID (not available on any Mac) detects you are wearing a mask.

You have a different issue - words matter.  Apple Watch unlocking my 3 x M1 Macs works perfectly, and I've not read online about anyone else having issues (not saying it doesn't exist, but I haven't seen or heard of it).

I have this issue with my iPhone 13 Pro. Very annoying

Hmm. I guess Apple's programmers and Beta testers don't go into stores wearing a mask. Silly of me, of course not, they use only Amazon, DoorDash, etc.!
