I don't think it is normal. Perhaps the battery charge is dropping so fast at that point it causes a crash before it can sleep? Do you not get the warning messages that the system is about to sleep because the battery is low? If this is in warranty I'd call Apple and see what they can offer you. Do you get reasonable battery life?
i dont have a powerbook. but it makes sense to me for it to turn off if the battery power is gone. what would keep it going? maybe i misunderstand the questoin though.
I have had several power books. The last is a Pismo 500. I don't usually get into this situation but as I recall they usually force the system to sleep when battery power is very low. In this condition you have an opportunity to plug in power. If you had any open documents with unsaved changes this saves your data. If the system suddenly shut down you might not have enough power to save all the documents before the battery failed.
Hmmm. Not something I like to experiment with. However, it may be that anything that prevents sleeping also prevents this emergency sleep. Downloading a file or recording sounds also prevents sleeping.

when i'm working normal, there is the
warning, the book falls asleep.. as it should be.
