Apple unveils 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro, M1 Max starting at $2499

During its "Unleashed" event, Apple launched a revamped 16-inch MacBook Pro, bringing Apple Silicon M1 Pro, M1 Max to the company's top range notebook.

As widely expected, Apple used its "Unleashed" event to continue its two-year effort to bring Apple Silicon to all Macs. The 16-inch MacBook Pro, last updated almost two years ago, had remained one of the few Intel Macs left.

Championed as a return to form when that Intel one launched, the 16-inch MacBook Pro had already brought a larger screen and replaced the disliked butterfly keyboard. Now with M1 Pro and M1 Max, it has stepped up its performance, too.

"We set out to create the world's best pro notebook," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, "and today we're excited to introduce the all-new MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max -- a game-changing combination of phenomenal performance, unrivaled battery life, and groundbreaking features."

"The all-new MacBook Pro adds a breathtaking XDR display, more ports like MagSafe 3, an advanced 1080p camera, and a sensational six-speaker sound system, all in a stunning new design," he continued. "The new MacBook Pro simply has no equal and is by far the best pro notebook we've ever built."

The Touch Bar is gone, replaced by a full-size function key row. There is also a wider Escape key, and the whole keyboard now has a black background instead of the space gray or silver of the chassis.

As expected, Apple has added an HDMI port and an SD card reader. In addition, it features three Thunderbolt 4 ports, plus MagSafe 3, an updated magnetic power cable, which supports fast charge.

Apple claims that the 16-inch MacBook Pro gets up to 21 hours of video playback, or 10 hours more than before. It's the longest battery life ever seen in a Mac notebook.

The display is a Liquid Retina XDR display featuring mini-LED. It provides 1,000 nits of constant brightness across the whole screen, and can reach a peak brightness of 1,600 nits.

Apple has increased the size of the internal display to 16.2 inches, including 7.7 million pixels. For external screens, the MacBook Pro with M1 Pro can drive up to two Pro Display XDR monitors. With M1 Max, it can drive up to three Pro Display XDR monitors -- and a 4K TV.

Prices start from $2,499 for an M1 Pro with 16-core GPU, 16GB Unified Memory, and 512GB SSD storage. A fully maxed-out 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, 32-core GPU, 64GB Unified Memory, and 8TB SSD storage, will cost $6,099.

Apple is taking orders for the new MacBook Pro today, October 18. They will be available beginning October 26.

The casing looks just like my MBP from about 12 years ago.

Not thrilled about the notch; everything else looks like a solid home run.

Only question - will this be a one kidney day, or two?

Yes, that's not a bad thing, though.

Agreed - in daily use it won't matter that much, but if you're doing anything that requires a full screen it will definitely be noticeable. The sad thing is the notch is unnecessary.

Meh - how many different ways can you package laptop components?  I am happy for once to see a "boring" yet eminently functional design.

Glad the ports many here declared "legacy" are back. Are they still "legacy" now?

Yep, looks like my beloved 12" Aluminum Powerbook.
Which was almost twice as thick as the new 16" MBP BTW.

Apple doesn't use "legacy" ports ever. So, they are the "future" from now onwards :).

I thought the way Apple's video explained it, 'we added more screen either side" as opposed to how some see this, 'we took away some screen area' would put an end to these comments.  But no. /sigh

Awesome, but I'll wait for M1 Max in a large iMac. I wonder if it'll ever make it into a Mac mini?

Impressive. Apple listened to users to provide a powerful MacBook Pro. They returned ports, especially mag safe is very welcome. Back to basics. Score!

If it wasn’t the notch then people would be complaining about bezels. There’s always something.

It's actually a big let down in terms of laptop design. Why are we bringing back HDMI when USB4 provides the same technology? I am ok with the SD slot but not ok with Magsafe and the HDMI port. They add more ugliness and waste to the laptop. They even said you can charge with USB-C so what's the point of MagSafe? I am glad they got rid of Touch Bar and the keyboard looks more functional and more comfortable.

A notch looks bad which is disappointing as it should be less obvious and seamlessly integrated into the menu bar but it totally "stands out" - but we will get used to it quickly.

    Performance-wise, it sounds impressive though.

Honestly, Apple should just stick to USB4 and the SD slot and that's it. That way, TV and monitors will be forced to use USB4. And force people to move to USB4.  Hopefully, in a couple of generations, Apple will get rid of all those ports.

We’ll get used to the notch, same as we did on the iPhone, and others will follow. What was interesting was the width of the notch. Room for Face ID in the next iteration.

The screen is bigger so the notch is not taking away from he screen. If anything it's part of the menu bar

lol oh jeeze. iMac and Mini already got M1 upgrades last time. MBP line is being completed since the low end was the first a year ago. Larger iMac likely next next.
