My little USB-C SD/micro SD reader is UHS-I, just looked it up. It’s been fine. So this is an upgrade.  I’ll probably still use the other reader for the micro cards from my drone instead of using a card adapter.
Off-topic but what do you have? I started flying a DJI Air 2s.  I have a 256 GB card in the drone and a 128 in the smart controller .

Don’t get me wrong, I am really glad that slot is back, it can be used to store less frequently accessed files at much lower cost than internal storage upgrades, but it would have been cool if it was SD Express.

Seems like the M1 is a little I/O constrained.  That's probably something they'll work on for the M2, and then we'll be unleashed all over again.

So is it 300Mbps as in the Twitter post or 300MB/sec? Since 300Mbps is megabits per second and 300MB/sec is 300 megabytes per second. 300Mbps is about 37 megabytes per second. So I'm guessing AI is probably right with megabytes/sec.

You need to look up the definition of legacy.

From the sounds of things this was a perfectly logical decision. Apple essentially took the bandwidth of a single TB4 port and divided it between an HDMI port and an SD slot. They also added a MagSafe port so you don’t need to take a USB C jack to charge. Like most logical decisions, the ideologues are deeply offended by it because, God forbid someone might have different needs than they do.
Would’ve been better to have left in something state of the art, a 4th TB4 port, than switch for two mediocre ports that many people won’t use.

I was thinking the same thing. I bet between this and the HDMI port thing is a bandwidth issue with the architecture. Probably a pretty good bet the new Mac Pro will get M2 or whatever Apple wants to call it with a much better system architecture to handle more things.

Still though, these new MacBook Pros are such kickers laptops. They basically took everything people were complaining the most about and just fixed it. Maybe they didn't fix it to some people's standards, but its been fixed. I think these will sell extremely well.

I was glad to see the ports except for the camera card slot. I have a Satechi breakout that has that kind of stuff.

But I do not see it as anything to get upset about. I use camera cards but I do not personally have a need for a faster card reader. My days of making my living were a long time ago back in film photography days. Nice to see a comment from a Pro using Leica.

It makes sense, the M1 was their first desktop processor. As such it had all the basics but wasn’t fully tricked out. It’s perfect for the MBA and entry level MacBooks. Looking at the M1 Mac Mini, though, I see it has 2 TB4 ports, a HDMI 2.0 port and 2 10 GB USB 3.1 ports. (Plus GB ethernet.) All told that’s not that much less than the machines introduced this week.

And I’ll ask you the same thing I’ve asked everyone else - how many people use HDMI and how many people use four TB4 ports?

Let me fix your statement for you:
”It’s better to have something people will use than to have a ‘state of the art’ 4th TB4 port that many people won’t use.”

This is typical Apple, provide what most customers really need rather than chasing the biggest numbers.

I think the SD slot is mostly targeted at photographers. Modern mirrorless cameras need very fast cards to support their high burst rates but there isn't the same need at the computer. The card reader in the new MBP isn't slow, it's likely to be the fastest item in a workflow that goes SD card -> Photo software -> human processor for a long time yet.

If the photographer needs a photo in a hurry, he/she is not going to remove the SD card, they'll use the camera's wireless instead.

So they took a port that was great for everyone, and replaced it with a couple ports that are good for some people. That's not a logical decision, so who's the idealogue?

I would assume that Apple have better data than any of us on whether more people need/want a fourth USB4 port or an HDMI port and/or SD card slot.
