This isn't good
Has anybody else had this kind of unusual VM activity under the new update? Everything's been running exceptionally for a few days -- just whacking out now. Should I try restarting my machine and repairing disk permissions? (performance gets VERY sluggish in the finder/OS)

Pageouts aren't a problem for me. Then again, I've got 1GB of RAM. I haven't restarted since the update (which I applied the evening it came out).
I'm not sure how repairing permissions would help you (it never hurts), but a restart might. It might be worth watching top from time to time to see if an application you're running is leaking memory or otherwise growing huge.

I've got 768 MB of memory in this PowerBook -- it shouldn't have been problem, either, and it wasn't til just now. But it seems it's gone away for the time being.

You sure you aren't just running an app with a memory leak or a number of apps at one or something?
Uptime is important to mention since the pages are cumulative since the last restart.

This with 384 MB of RAM, and up only 2 days. I haven't had that many apps open even. Safari, Mail, Thoth and Excell, if I recall well (that must be what that 60% hit rate is about). I'm a compulsive neurotic.
How's the best way to find out who's guilty?

I still in the habit of doing a shutdown rather than a sleep. Its quite funny that you guys only restart every few weeks.... I never even contemplated using the sleep function on my windows PC..... its crap.

well, safari definitely seems to have some memory leak issue, and a serious one to...

God dam memory leaks! If it wasn't for them I could easily break my 28 day uptime record.
