Apple Music-streamed Astroworld crowd crush kills 8

Tragedy struck at the Astroworld Festival on Friday, after a crowd surge during the Apple Music-streamed Travis Scott performance led to the deaths of 8 people while also injuring over 300 others.

Houston officials say that a surge that occurred at the time of Scott's on-stage performance at the festival was a major problem that overwhelmed security forces, outside of NRG Park. Scott's performance commenced shortly after 9 p.m. and was followed closely by crowd surges among the estimated 50,000 attendees.

Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena said during a press conference that the surges occurred due to a panic in the crowd, with attendees running to safety, reports Variety. The show was paused by Scott multiple times, as security attempted to help fans and the fire department rescued injured people from the crowd.

A "mass-casualty incident" was triggered at 9:38 p.m., with several unconscious fans requiring CPR. The incident was rapid, as executive assistant chief Larry Satterwhite said "it seemed like it happened over the course of a few minutes."

Report sources say festival staff saved more people from being hurt due to their quick response, and that the festival is working with police to secure drone and other footage for an investigation. Police are also said to be looking into a localized drug spiking incident that could have caused 11 cardiac arrest incidents.

Following the event, Astroworld's organizers have canceled day 2 of the festival. A statement thanks emergency workers, confirms authorities are "looking into the series of cardiac arrests that took place," and for anyone with knowledge to contact the police.

"Our hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight," the statement reads. "Especially those we lost and their loved ones."

Apple Music live-streamed the performance of Travis Scott on Friday. It is unclear how much of the crowd events were aired to subscribers.

In response to the incident, Apple posted a statement to its Apple Music Twitter account on Saturday. The statement reads "Our hearts go out to the victims who tragically lost their lives or were injured at Astroworld and their loved ones. We are devastated."

Seems way more likely that it's the spiked drugs than from surging crowds....

Yeah no. They were crushed to death.

The same fest had three people tramped in 2019.

Did Apple Music stream the video of the concert or just the audio? One fan climbed up onto a camera stand to yell to the camera man to stop the concert because people were dying. The camera man reacted with anger and threatened to have her thrown off the high stand. If that was an Apple employee or contractor, this is very much an Apple story.

Camera operator was probably on Astroworld crew. They would be filming whether Apple streamed it or not. Apple would just get a feed sent from the camera operators.

Are you confident that there were no Apple execs there telling the crew to go on?

No, Apple would have received a feed from one of the satellite uplink trucks that was getting it’s feed from one of the production trucks. This camera op was probably getting screamed at by the director or TD or producer (take your pick) over the rts to “get me a shot”, “fix your shot”,”what the f*@$ is going on” or whatever and it’s not his job to do anything other than to be a camera op. If someone climbed on to his platform that person is lucky they didn’t get pushed off or escorted out of the event by security.

Yes, that’s  what I meant by getting the feed.
My point was that the camera operator was most likely part of the Astroworld crew. I was on the rigging crew when they came to my town, so I saw it first hand.

Of course not, but I doubt any Apple execs were there directing the show. The Astroworld crew does that. As 12strangers explained in more depth than I did, Apple just gets a feed from the AW people.

Alternatively, getting escorted out of the event would be lucky, as compared to being crushed to death in the crowd. I don’t blame anyone for trying what they could to get it stopped. Crowd surges are a real thing, and they are deadly.

No, they were CRUSHED. You know that cardiac arrest often happens when you are trampled on with many people stepping on your chest, leading to heart to fail due to rupture or causing it to go into v-fib? It's quite common.

It’s horrible and I can’t imagine being in a crowd like that, fighting for your life.

Were you there?  Are you a doctor who has autopsied the unfortunate victims?  Did you read the article?  The article explicitly mentioned drug spiking linked  cardiac arrest events possibly happening and separately mentioned cardiac arrest victims.  The only mention of crushing seems to be in the article  title.

So it seems that there is not clarity of what happened and we'll have to wait for the investigation.  It does say that the crowd surges seem to have been caused by a "panic" in the crowd.  A wave of drug induced cardiac arrests would probably qualify as an event that would cause panic.

The truth is probably a mix of the various events.  Some people died from drug induced cardiac events and others were crushed in the surge, but that is just speculation from actually reading the article.

Camera operators are in communications with the producer. They wear two way headsets. The operator could have pressed a button and told the producer that people are getting crushed to death and the show should have been stopped.

Doubtful that he would have been able to talk directly to any producer. He could have said something to the TD or maybe the director who could have mentioned it to a producer who could have passed the message on to someone in the event coordinating department.

I agree with you that the person who climbed up on to the camera platform was doing what she thought may help but I don’t think you understand how far down the a camera op for a live event is.

I’m a Production sound mixer for scripted tv, live tv and features, I know how busy the com gets during a live event. Camera operators are generally just day players.
