Apple VR headsets still scheduled for 2022, but will be very hard to get

While Apple's VR headset may be released in 2022, supply constraints and other issues will mean that it will only be available in limited quantities until 2023, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports.

Reiterating his previous claim that Apple has pushed production of its first headset to the end of 2022, Ming-Chi Kuo says this will give supplier Genius an advantage. Genius is one of two firms that Apple has ordered pancake/Fresnel lenses from, although as yet its production yield is less than that of rival Young Optics.

In a note to investors, seen by AppleInsider, Kuo says that "Apple's AR/MR production delays will help Genius close the gap in production yields for pancake lenses with Young Optics."

So, while Apple may still release the headset before the end of 2022, supplies will be profoundly limited until the first calendar quarter of 2023, Kuo says. And, the limited quantities to start will help Apple diversify its supply chain.

Kuo reports that Young Optics has the NPI (New Product Introduction) order from Apple, but that Genius may become an equal supplier.

"[Apple's] assembly schedule delay provides more time for Genius to improve the yield," says Kuo. "Based on the survey that Genius's yield rate is already very close to Young Optics', we believe the yield rate of both should be similar before mass production, so in the best-case scenario, Genius can get half of the orders."

Kuo further says that Genius has obtained a "significant" order from Meta (formerly Facebook) for its "new high-end VR" device.

"We expect Meta to release its new high-end VR headset, Oculus Quest 3, in mid-2H22," writes Kuo, "with an estimated shipment of 1-2 million units in 2022."

Kuo's estimate of Apple production at the end of 2022 backs up a recent research note by Loup Ventures partner and analyst Gene Munster. Munster believes it's possible that an Apple AR headset will be announced at WWDC 2022, but won't be more than a prototype then.

I’m about as interested in buying a VR product from Meta as I am in visiting Talos IV.

Not sure why everyone is so crazed about bothersome VR goggles.  Anything short of a full-fledged holodeck will be lackluster at best.  But hey, as an AAPL investor, so long as it sells, fine and well, bring it on!

For me, the thought of people running around in public wearing these things is creepy. Remember the ‘Glassholes’!

Apparently you haven't used VR before. I've been playing PSVR for five years now and it's still mind-blowing, and that's gen 1 hardware. PSVR2 is set to amaze later this year. "Bothersome", my ass.

Nobody is going to be walking around in public in VR headsets.

I “Liked” this because it’s unfortunately true, not because it’s good this is an actual reason this company’s crap will sell

Even a pair of lightweight eyeglasses bother me.  Same with watches.  Some people love wristwatches, but I tend to like a naked wrist.  AND I AM NOT ALONE.  Just because you and a bunch of other people don't consider goggles bothersome doesn't mean they aren't bothersome for some people like myself.  And the fact remains that NO GOGGLES AT ALL (e.g., in a Trek TNG holodeck) is obviously the ideal here, because you are wearing nothing at all, yet interacting in a virtual environment.  It's irrelevant that holodeck tech doesn't exist currently.  The comparison I made is legitimate.  Wearing nothing at all and interacting in VR is obviously preferred to wearing something an interacting.

But like I said, I am not against VR even though it doesn't tickle my fancy.  If it sells, that's the most important thing.  And you don't need to try to change my mind about VR to continue enjoying it yourself.  More power to you!

So a December 31st, 2022 release! I am looking forward to it. I'm also looking forward to PSVR2.

Hey, if we're allowed to compare to fictional technology then anything short of The Matrix will be a complete failure for Apple.  The comparison I made is legitimate because I say so.

    Insincere sign off!

What an insane comment. Yes, of course, fantasy tech from a science-fiction series is preferable in make believe than the confines of IRL tech. Same with Dr. Crusher’s medical bays. That has no bearing on whether these are viable products here IRL, today.

Nor does your personal preferences. Lots of people don’t like wearing clothing whatsoever, and they “are not alone”, but that has no bearing on whether clothing items can sell.

Yeah, I hate that I have to look at a monitor and type on keys and move things using a pointing device on my Mac instead of just doing everything with my mind AND I AM NOT ALONE. lol
