    Fake.

Use your heads people. Why would Apple give out these specs 6 months in advance to a French dealer or Apple France? What purpose could that serve? It's just iMacs, iBooks PowerMacs and PowerBooks. There are no radically new and different products that would have to be prepared for.

I think this is just someone's wishful thinking for Apples future releases translated into French to add some air of mystery.

I don't know... didn't Macnn note that CANCOM - a big German dealer - put out something similar in regard to the release date of Pro equipment in August?

Maybe there is some truth to it.

That CANCOM thing was a little one line blurb that just mentioned apple was coming out with new pro machines in August.

It's a bit like saying the sun is coming up tomorrow... It's something we already knew...

What on earth are you jabbering on about? USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 connectors are cross-compatible.

Here's a news flash for the RDF'd: get this, Firewire 2 connectors will require an adaptor to jack into Firewier 1 ports! Thats right...take a look at IEEE specs.</strong><hr></blockquote>

true BUT USB 2.0 of today really isn't USB 2.0 its similar and is backwards compatible...but Its not a real standard and is DESPERATLY starved for bandwidth and in some tests performs slower than ULTRA SCSI...I read about it at arstechnica I think....but it boils down to that USB 2.0 is just something intel and a couple others threw together to keep pc users away from firewire...which is a much better standard...as far as an adaptor is concerned...thats too bad...I was hoping firewire2 would be backwords compatible with firewire1...but if firewire2 is 1.6 gbps I won't care.....

one thing is for sure....with all the recent purchases apple has been making and rumors...apple is working on something REALLY big....probably the g5 and its probably going to be just as good as we are hoping or better....somehow It feels like unless moto STILL doesn't have their shite together apple is going to be rocking

These specs sound sexier in French (infrarouge--the new Chanel lipstick)

    Curious... could you provide a link to these? The only official specs I can find show the normal two variants, the 6pin powered and the 4pin AV: <a href="http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/CCCTC10.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/CCCTC10.htm</a>;

    The following technical bulletin does show a refinement of the 4pin plug, but it's dated Feb 2001: <a href="http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/TB0002.htm"; target="_blank">http://www.1394ta.org/Technology/Specifications/Descriptions/TB0002.htm</a>;

I'm not finding what you're alluding to, and would love to see it.

maybe because the european headquarter from apple is in paris? maybe because its chief in command pascal cagni spends a lot of time in cupertino? maybe because the european market accounts for 30% of apple's revenue?

do you guys really think no one knows anything about new products outside of cupertino? sure they know. otherwise they couldn't plan to make this or that. i'll give you an example:

several months in advance some people have to buy advertising space. so the nice woman dealing with this don't know shit about what the specs are, but she does know what kind of product it is. the higher in the chain the more they know.

there's certainly a lot of knowledge in paris. and we all know the french.

I have no idea what Wrong Robot is jabbering about. The SCSI comparison is lame since Firewire is slower also.

As far as 1394b goes, it will sport a new connector. I believe they're calling it a beta connector. They realized that the two connector strategy (6/4 pin) was dumb and are moving to a new connector. It'll be smaller than the current 6 pin, but still carry power. It will also be necessary to use a beta only cable if you want to max out 1394b. I can't find a link right now, but when the spec was announced recently the new connector issue came up.

I do remember Steve Jobs giving his thoughts about USB 2 but why would the Apple Store stock their shelves with USB 2 cables? hmmmmmmm Twilight Zone theme song comes on in my head <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

haha.. my impression was that apple ignores the rest of the world (i.e. everything outside of north america) hoping that it will go away soon..

your impression is correct. nonetheless there are many people in the know outside of cupertino, especially in paris. too many logistics involved. all the strategies come from california though.

I think over all ......... a fake. I think they just took some info from around the web and mixed it with their own. Also I think Apple is pretty well done with the G3.

that's all just educated evolutionary guessing, nothing more and nothing less.

in fact keeping the old iMac, even for edu only, is probably not a very good guess anymore, and the top end PowerMac costing 5190 euro is just ridiculous.

that's about 7800 Swiss Franks or 4600$ US.

That's 800$ more than the current ultimate model

and 1600$ more than the top model.

If you believe that, you could as well say that Santa Claus is for real and used to be a woman before he was raped by Rudolph the red nosed raindeer and grew a beard because it's so ****ing cold on the northpole.

And just for the minute likeliness of it being true: Apple has gone completely insane.

I agree. These recent purchases suggest that Apple is going to attempt to capture the high end 3d design market, and their attempt is going to be very well planned out and serious. I'm expecting something similar to FCP, an entire "Apple solution" for professional 3d modelers and designers. And best of all, Apple can integrate it with FCP! Such a product would be stunning, and it would take Hollywood by storm.

The benefits of capturing such a market would be awesome. Sales volume wouldn't be all that great, but the prestige would be high, visibility would be good, and Apple's reputation would get a great boost. Suddenly a Mac would be THE choice not only for audio, movies, but also special effects. A mac would be all that's needed to make an entire movie, at a professional level. Amazing. And since Steve Jobs is running Pixar, I'm sure he would love to be able to replace all of Pixars Wintels and SGIs with Macs.

There is only one problem with the above strategy for entering the high end 3d market: Apple's pro hardware. The Powermacs simply don't have enough processing power to compete in this market. The G4 is TERRIBLE at the sort of calculations needed for 3d modeling and rendering, it always losses badly to Pentiums in this area. So for Apple to target this market, it means that part of their plan is new hardware that can compete with any Wintel system out there!

This also goes with the Maya for Mac development...it seems unlikely that Maya's developers would have developed for the Mac if all Apple could muster up was a GHz G4. Current Mac hardware isn't very competitive for running Maya, and most Maya users would rather use a Wintel and spend less time staring at progress bars.

So I think that soon, before this Fall, Apple will unleash some very impressive Powermacs. They will have G5s and advanced motherboards, and they will compete with Pentiums even at 3d.

Oh, as for these French specs, they sound like BS to me. Utter BS. But I like them!

Go DAWG! Although his bark doesn't sound anything like a francophone's, Junkyard speaks the language of HOPE. If Dogman's right, a lot of us will be sending some cash to Cupertino. I know I will.

Now JUNK-DOG, just go sniff out a DORSAL FIN to confirm all of this ....

These specs sound incredibly realistic to me. If you notice, USB 2 doesn't make an appearence in ANY line until July 2002 (which is when the new mobos will obviously be introduced). The TiBook and iBooks coming in May look like they have the same motherboards as they currently do, as well as the same port configurations.

Also the 933 and 1 GHz speeds in the TiBook would explain why Apple has not used the readily available 800 MHz 7445s right now.

September also sounds like a very good time for a next gen TiBook, with bigger screen, new cas, etc.

As far as the 4 main hardware lines go this year, I believe this is pretty close to what we're gonna see.
