Senate Judiciary advances bill that would force Apple to allow iOS side-loading

Suggestion to Apple: Get ahead of this massive security problem. If anyone can side load any app they want onto their iOS device, that puts every other app at risk from data theft and other hacks. To get around this start working right now on an alternative version of iOS that users can install if they want to, much like the beta profiles you have  now. The alternative side loading open iOS has no Apple App Store. It has no access to iCloud, CloudKit or any other technology that could become compromised by apps that have not been through the app review process. Most iOS users (myself included) will opt for the secure version of iOS for their primary devices. For older, otherwise unused devices, the alternative open but unsecure iOS will be a lot of fun to play with. Think of it as another form of recycling. The open iOS does no not need to be updated as often as the main secure version because (duh) it's not secure.
The problem with this approach is all you need is a few trending companies to pull together and provide their services through side loading only and you'll have an AppStore that's as useless as macOS's AppStore. All they have to do is take Facebook, WhatsApp, Netflix, HBO, Snapchat to side loading and it's all over. These companies don't want nutrition labels either.
Hardly any users will opt for the unsafe open version of iOS on the devices they use the most. If those apps jumped to side loading, they would see almost all their iOS users vanish over night. No company will make that decision.

The bill is about giving everyone choice - for app makers to choose how their apps are distributed, and for device owners to have full control over what software they can install on their personally owned property, and from where they get that software. And just like Facebook could choose to remove their app from the App Store, you could then choose not to install their hypothetical sideloadable replacement. If you choose to stick with the App Store, great. But a device's owner should be the only and ultimate gatekeeper over what apps are installed - not Apple.
If Apple allowed Android to be optionally installed by users on their iPhones, does that satisfy your stated requirement that "device owners should have full control over what software they can install on their personally owned property" or are you being deceptive (or ignorant) that your problem isn't with your personally owned property, but with the operating system that Apple currently provides for its hardware? Why don't you just come out and say the truth, that your entire problem is with iOS, not the iPhone, and that you don't think Apple should be allowed to build iOS the way it wants? You despise all 200 restrictions on app developers in the current Apple App Store Review Guidelines. (https://developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines/) Right? You want to go back to the days of MS-DOS.

And when you say "giving everyone choice" you exclude the developers of any operating system from having any choice. So you also want companies like Microsoft to open up the Xbox to alternate stores, right?

Well we’ll the wizards of smart have made a “committee decision”, which in the real world is meaningless. Let’s see Congress had screwed up Energy, Environment, Medical, Auto, Transportation, and on and on and on. Can someone please tell them to get out of our lives and LEAVE US ALONE! The system is broke and some of these participants couldn’t tell you the difference between an app or apple ( play on words ).

Well said and I completely agree with you. And we have EVIDENCE supporting your claim when we look at situation with Google Play Store. None of the apps have been pulled from Google Play Store due to 15%/30% commission, because majority of the user base PREFERs to install Apps only from the Play Store, despite the ability to side-load Apps has existed in Android for years.

It seems that our senators and representatives are in the midst of a oneupmanship game to see who can be the stupidest and craziest.

They aren't addressing the needs of the country -- just trying to impress whichever cult put them in power.

Everyone here panicking about side loaded apps infiltrating their phones. Uh, just don’t install anything from outside the App Store (just as has been done with the Cydia store for a decade). These straw man arguments are pathetic.

Hardly pathetic. You realize that these side loaded apps are then at the front door of iOS, right?

You also have been paying attention to the Israeli firm that's able to exploit the iOS without being at the front door, right?

So imagine (If you have the capability to imagine)  to realize that it might be that much easier to get into and exploit iOS once side loaded on the device.

    Sheeesh.

    hmmm, wrong.

You live in a tech forum bubble if you believe your own version of this. There will be an insane rush for people to side load. Finally they will think can have their freedom of apps and not deal with the official App Store. Then the clowns (non tech forum people) will be SHOCKED and PISSED at Apple when their iPhone is compromised. Imagine getting a locked screen demanding a ransom. Ya know, like PCs and Mac viruses. Then they will cry that Apple 'sucks' LOL! Outside of these cringe tech forums there are millions of naive (aka alot of stupid people) that use technology, both iOS and Android.

At the dawn of iOS Apple imagined a walled garden to protect YOU, the user. Hopefully Apple will figure out a way to continue it.
