Does anyone know of any good sites that have pronounciations for tech terms and products? I'm in an argument with my friend and need something to prove this one way or another.

Why not just make a poll here?

Or you could try Dictionary.com. They tend to be pretty good with keeping up to date on tech terminology.

    What is the term, incidentally?

Funny enough, today in my Java class someone asked the teacher when we were supposed to provide an "earl" for an image. No one knew what he was talking about... he then said "you know, like http..." and we realized that he was pronouncing URL phonetically. Strange, I've never heard anyone do that before.

    It's a few terms, actually.

    Linux(dumb, I know)

    I say: lin -ucks

    He says: line-uks

    Chimera

    I say: Kie-mera

    He says:Chi-mera

    TiBook

    I say: TieBook

    He says: TeeBook

    My friend is a moron.

Of course, I got a C- in English, so....

Edit: And I suck at spelling!

According to dictionary.com, the proper pronunciations are:

Linux: lin (as in lint) uks (as in yucks): lin-uks

Chimera (aka Chimaera): ky (as in by) mir (as in pier) uh (as in duh): ky-mir-uh

Alternately: ki (as in kiss) + mir-uh: ki-mir-uh

TiBook is a made up word and it's subjective. I say it "Tie-Book" though, like "Tie Fighter"

I've heard people refer to URL as "earl" before. Surprised you haven't.

And TiBook would HAVE to be "TyeBook," as the Ti is short for "Tietayneum," and it's a spin-off of "EyeBook."

As far as Linux goes, I've heard it half and half both ways. I don't think it really matters, although "Lyenux" sounds better in Red Hat Linux. At least I think so.

The word that's always confused me is Radeon. Is it "Raid-on," "Raid-ey-on," or "Radd-ey-on?" I don't have one, so why should I care, right?

The computer word that confuses me the most is "Microsoft." Is it pronounced "suks" or "blows"?

I left part of the Dictionary.com entry out, here it is:

    Quote:

The pronunciation /lee'nuhks/ is preferred because the name "Linus" has an /ee/ sound in Swedish (Linus's family is part of Finland's 6% ethnic-Swedish minority).

So I suppose the proper pronunciation is lee-nuhks, like they say.

I've wondered about the pronunciation of "GIF". Is it pronounced like "give" (except with an "f" sound rather than "v"), or is it pronounced like JIFF (like the peanut butter)? I say it like "give" and will never change how I pronounce it but I've wondered about that. I guess everyone should just switch to using PNGs instead of gifs to ease some confusion. Better format anyways.

I pronounce GIF with a hard G (like give). Check out this link for an amusing comment on this (sort of) (it's defintely amusing, just sort of on this topic)
