Apple releases macOS Big Sur 11.6.6 & Catalina 10.15.7 security update

Apple has released macOS Big Sur 11.6.6 and a security update to macOS Catalina 10.15.7, bringing minor updates to the last-generation Mac operating systems likely focused on security fixes and under-the-hood improvements.

The macOS Big Sur 11.6.6 update was released alongside Apple's current slate of software updates, including macOS Monterey 12.4 and iOS 15.5.

It isn't yet clear what specific fixes or updates are included in macOS 11.6.6 or macOS 10.15.7, but they're likely to be minor with no major user-facing features.

Apple last provided an update to macOS Big Sur in March with the release of macOS Big Sur 11.6.5, which addressed a number of security vulnerabilities. Prior to that, Apple updated the macOS Big Sur platform in February with macOS 11.6.4.

The macOS Monterey 12.4 update on Monday similarly contained minor under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.

Apple first released macOS Big Sur in November 2020. The update brought an number of major changes to the Mac operating system, including a user interface redesign and support for Apple Silicon.

    It isn't yet clear what specific fixes or updates are included in macOS 11.6.6 or macOS 10.15.7, but they're likely to be minor with no major user-facing features. 

    If Apple is releasing a patch for macOS versions going that far back, I doubt whatever security issue it's fixing is all that minor.

    The last “security” Catalina update totally broke NTFS support… with no fix possible from Tuxera etc. will this release fix it or break something else…?

    The Monterey 12.4 update is 3.11 GB and includes the following bug fixes. Not sure why this wasn't at least included in the article:

    And what if that security update broke NTFS on purpose because of security breaches? It’s up to the third party vendors to keep their software compatible, not the other way around.

    Very satisfying update. No surprises. Second monitor on my iMac showed up immediately without having to plug & replug the TB cable, which sometimes occurred with prior updates. I did have to reset the orientation to 90 deg on the second monitor (physically in portrait mode) but that's a very minor nit, especially when physically rotating the magic trackpad 2 makes driving the cursor in the Displays settings app easy when the orientation setting is mismatched.
