Apple has a new advertisement and campaign highlighting how its privacy features can help stop third parties and data brokers from using or selling your information.

In the minute and a half ad, a young iPhone user named Ellie discovers a secret world of data brokers and other companies who are happily buying and selling her private data and information.

Some of Ellie's data being sold include her emails, her drugstore purchases, her contact information, and her browsing history. Those are all information types commonly collected by data harvesters.

However, in the ad, Ellie uses some of Apple's privacy-focused features to fight back. That includes using App Tracking Transparency to stop apps from tracking her across other websites and apps, and using Mail Privacy Protection to stop companies from using invisible tracking pixels to gather information on her email reading habits.

"iPhone has privacy features like App Tracking Transparency and Mail Privacy Protection that help you control who sees your data and who doesn't," Apple wrote of the ad.

Some of Apple's other built-in features also fight dat harvesting, such as the fact that iMessage is end-to-end encrypted and the fact that app permissions can control whether third-party apps get access to information like contact data.

Good to make people understand the amount of data being collected and sold!

All you have to do is look at the evolution of Meta’s stock price to figure out whatever Apple is doing is working quite well.

Not to be nitpicking. But the girl is already using a newer iPhone in the first place.

Shouldn’t they show someone give her a new iPhone and take away an android and then those auction people dust out?

But then it would defeat the purpose of showing the privacy feature "Ask App Not to Track" and the "Protect Mail activity" feature, which were the highlights of the ad, indicating, that once you have those enabled, the apps do not track. I think an Android user seeing this and knowing they do not have such options on their platform, is a pretty big selling point.

Bravo Apple! It’s a testament to the strength of Apple’s products that they haven’t really bothered to press their advantage over Android on the matter of privacy. Most of Apple’s advertising highlights practical use cases for their devices. Anyone who is aware of how companies like Facebook and Google operate, knows very well how important privacy is. Surprisingly few people (that I know) give this serious thought. I’d like to see Apple do more adverts like these and really rub Google’s nose in it, because Google simply has no response. Their privacy features are a smoke screen, they will never abandon their golden goose business model.

Who can take a dry and boring subject and make a cool story/advertisement about it?

    Apple.

    Never a doubt.
