By far the biggest problem with Homepods of all sizes is Siri.
Secondly for the Maxi was price. A Maxi for say $249 would have had some chance of selling, vs the $349 it was released for. Also having zero analog inputs doesn't help.
I don't think a HP with a display will happen, because if it did it with the current form factor it would either be a watch sized screen on a HP mini sized device or a bigger say 3" display on a HP maxi. And it would cost $500+, since Apple has apparently lost all sense of how much things cost in the rest of the market.
A different design is of course feasible, but then it'll end up being something like a crippled iPad between a couple of speakers and again $500+. By which point why not get Wifi speakers and Airplay to them from an iPad which is much more capable of being more than just a display.
Perhaps a functional display that resembles an embedded Apple Watch? Obviously larger, but functionality is closer to an Apple Watch in terms of taps and swipes.
An outdoor version (or an indoor/outdoor version) would be awesome. I would love to have a HomePod on my back porch but not have to worry about it with rain and wind and dust and heat and cold.
Yes. Usable plugged in (most of the time) and with a battery when unplugged.
The biggest failing of the old HomePod was price. All that is really needed if to update the processor to the one in the mini, maybe add Bluetooth and line in.
Then sell it for 199 or a pair for 379.
The majority of the design and tooling is already paid off so this should be a realistic price point even for Apple.
What I would really like to see is something that could replace my Sonos Arc and Subs as well, with the original HPs filling in for the Sonos Ones on the rear channel.

Why are you here? Window’s and Android are good for those who are cheap and don’t care about any quality whatsoever, built for who just want the bare minimum.

Apple already has the cheapie speaker on the market the one most people on this site said they should make? You want free? It even has software only support so that when Apple cancels it, updated software in time goes away and leaves you with a brick.

That explanation never made much sense as consumer headphones were always within that same price range. Example: $399 for Sony XM5. I haven't noticed AI or any other tech site reviewing those Sony headphones treating the price as being too high.

People only generally buy one set of headphones. And pricey headphones are a fairly niche market. People need several smart speakers to be able to control their smart home effectively, and at $349 that was just too much compared to the competition.
If it wasn’t about price, what else was the reason the original HP sold so badly?
