spymac sez new portables soon

According to Apple insiders, an updated Power Book and iBook line may make an appearance before the middle of June.

Sources confirmed that Apple has began offering employee discounts on the current top of the line Power Book.

"We're currently being offered the 667 at [large] discount. This usually happens about a month before new models are introduced to the public, but this has been going on for some time now," one Apple employee writes.

(Note: The Employee Purchase Plan has been offering all Apple computers (excluding the new iMac) at discount since Macworld Tokyo. Savings are currently between two and three hundred dollars.)

Aside from discounts offered through the Employee Purchase Plan, Apple's public embracing of the education market may provide the best hope for updated portables. Purchases for the following academic year are planned in May and June.

"With all the publicity that the iBooks have been getting in the education market, I would be surprised if a refreshed iBook line was not introduced in time for us to make a fair [purchasing] decision..." writes one educator.

One Apple insider affirms, "I am positive that the new iBooks will be out before June."

Apple recently launched the Go Wireless and Save promotion, offering customers who purchase an Apple portable together with an AirPort Base station an $100 instant rebate. The promotion expires June 30, though Apple reserves the right to cancel the promotion at any time.

I don't know if there will be released in june, but for MWNY for sure. However if Apple can release this machines in june they better do it, the sooner will be the better.

Many people where disapointed to see no upgrade of the I book and the ti book at Tokyo.

I still don't understand why people use SpyMac or MOSR as source

Just a little note. The computer store at UCLA is usually a good indicator if something is going to be refreshed. Apple dumps a bunch of machines on them when they need them to move fast.

It's not exactly shocking news, given that Apple has a refresh cycle of about one year, and by that metric a new iBook comes due in May and a new TiBook is overdue.

I'm most interested in what Apple will do with the iBook. The TiBook's direction seems pretty certain to me: The same basic idea, only better. Apple could take the iBook in a number of different directions, though.

Because the whole reason you read rumors sites and rumors forums is for entertainment purposes and not for making key purchasing decisions? I found the iWalk to be quite entertaining, and it had me excited for a while, and I didn't take it personally when I found out it wasn't real.

At least SpyMac is trying to publish something. I don't even know why MOSR bothers anymore, as their twice a month articles are poorly written and don't really say anything terribly exciting...

It seems logical for Apple to release updated iBooks and PowerBooks shortly before MWNY in June. Doing so would allow them to tout these notebooks (especially the PowerBook) as close to the desktop G4s in speed and performance, thus boosting notebook sales before a desktop update (at MWNY, in this case). This is a common Apple practice ? the same situation happened when the new iMac was introduced.

I completely agree with Amorph. It's logical apple updates them, and Spymac makes a good point about the ed market.

My question is.. when will the ibook get a G4~?

Same question here. I'm afraid the answer is probably sometime after I buy a G3 or just give up alltogether and get a PC.

    Ditto you two.

But this was only logical. The 'Books are due for an update.. especially the iBook. But I'm not sure it'll go G4 just yet... Mainly because I think the only reason the iMac got a G4 was because it needed one for decent SuperDrive performance. It's hurting PowerMac sales, though the price bump has helped a bit, and god knows most consumers don't need a G4. It is just a step up, I suppose. There's a much higher chance of the iBook going G4 at the same time or at the very latest AFTER the PowerMac goes G5. It would look pretty bad to have a G3 and a G5 in the same lineup.. especially once you see the benchmarks.

As I've said in another forum; I think with the current chips available, the iBook is better off with the faster, lower-wattage G3 chips that IBM is in the process of introducing. Clock speed is still the name of the game for anything that isn't multimedia or graphics-related; and for something as small as the 12 inch iBook, there's a limit to how big a battery and how much cooling you can put in that little case. Even Photoshop still does quite respectably with the G3; it is only with DVD-writing, mpeg encoding and other such multimedia things that the difference becomes truly glaring. An 800MHz G3 750fx, using less power and generating less heat than the current 600MHz G3 750cxe (or a 1GHz using the same power, but maybe that's too much to hope for until fall), and with a lithium polymer battery for a 50-100 percent increase in battery life; I think I would be very happy with that for the iBook.

And I think the slowness of the OS X Finder; I trust Apple will have that licked with OS 10.2, without having to resort to a G4 in a subnotebook. Personally, other than the clunkiness of resizing windows, I think they've already made a lot of progress. If they can just get the handling of the windows down . . . .

I have a question in regard to photoeditor's post. How much more battery life can a lithium polymer provide over the current Li-ion ones? I mean, yes, the iPod has 10 hour battery life, but it also uses a lot less power (no big lcd, cooler processor, etc). Is a 50-100% increase plausible?

No. The advantage of Lithium Polymer is not more battery life. It barely edges ahead of Li-Ion in battery life. It's advantage is that you can mold it into any shape you want. This is why it's used in the iPod.

I had seen a very nicely done graphical chart on battery life posted by a developer somewhere on the Net that the polymer batteries indeed have much longer battery life than the regular lithium ion. Unfortunately I can't for the life of me remember where. In any case, that information surprised me, because I had also assumed the key to the polymer battery was the shape rather than the durability. But as I recall it was from some "corporate" source -- not a rumor site or message board. Maybe there's truth in both respects; a more "shapely" battery could cram more juice in the iBook's little case, perhaps. Sorry I can't be of more help here.

If you look at <a href="http://ether.asu.edu/video/TiGutz/TiGutz.jpg"; target="_blank">this X-ray of a PB you can see that even if the polymer batteries doesn´t hold more energy per sq inch alone the ability to pack it more tightly will give it a %30-40 boost.
