Apple is freezing hiring, cutting budgets, claims new report

A report claiming to be based on multiple sources within Apple, says that the company is drastically cutting its budget for hiring staff, despite Tim Cook's denial.

Apple has previously been rumored to be reducing recruitment, and is known to have cut some contract staff. But Tim Cook has said that Apple is not slowing hiring, it is just being "more deliberate" about recruitment.

Now, however, Business Insider claims to have information of "high-level" conversations within Apple, which show a conscious hiring freeze. Reportedly, existing staff have been told that there will be no further recruitment for at least many months, perhaps until the end of Apple's fiscal year in September 2023.

Apple's Jobs page still features very many positions, but according to one of Business Insider's reported three sources, Apple has designated "no budget" for recruitment.

An Apple spokesperson issued a statement to the publication, denying the claims and repeating Tim Cook's previous comments on the issue.

"We are continuing to hire but given the economic environment we're taking a very deliberate approach in some parts of the business," said the spokesperson. "We are very confident in Apple's future and are investing for the long term. We want to be thoughtful and make smart decisions that enable us to continue fueling innovation for the long term."

Okay this word “deliberate” keeps coming up in several articles in last couple months.  Did not respond then but have to comment that use of this word is interesting.  Why is it only now that hires are “deliberate”?   Anybody who runs a company is not just hiring people on a whim for no reason.  It is always “deliberate” that somebody is hired.  for Cook to use such a phrase is really interesting to me.  Just seems odd,  a way of talking about it but not really saying anything.

In Apple's terms, it's probably the difference between "Hey recruiter, get us some programmers, sales managers, retail, process managers, etc, stat!" They "don't care" who, they just need some bodies really fast! They count on the recruiter to do the bulk of the work ensuring whoever is hired is a good fit and can do the job. Now, deliberate probably means "let's carefully interview this person and make sure they are a good fit."

A hiring freeze for a company the size of Apple basically means they don't want to grow head count very fast. There are hundreds to thousands of employees leaving Apple and and being hired by Apple in any given year. Even if they don't lay off anyone, they still have to hire people to replace people who retire, people who go to other companies, etc. They probably are going to hire thousands even if they had a hiring "freeze".

Guessing they want to focus on some very specific projects and/or technologies that they want to release and get right.

As Steve Jobs explained at Apple’s 1997 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC)

“Focusing is about saying ‘no,‘”. “You’ve got to say ‘no, no, no’ and when you say ‘no,’ you piss off people.”

To Jobs, focus wasn’t about willpower. It was about the courage to abandon 1,000 great ideas to meet one big goal — even if that made people mad in the process.

With inflation expectations only getting worse and people getting away with crazy demands, Apple must face the facts: customers are going to have much less buying power as well as much less motivation to buy. It’s tighten the belt time. It will last for a while - even if there is a big political shift after the midterms (because the other side doesn’t want that one to succeed-like children) and then get better. But it will be a while. So Apple is doing the right thing in terms of securing the foundations and closing the windows for a bit. Smart business.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the “slash & freeze” rumors. All companies have some knobs they can tweak to adapt to changing market conditions. Simply cutting back on the number of open positions and adjusting some new project timelines are examples of tactical decisions that fall into the “being more deliberate” category.

I find it rather odd that so many pundits are jumping on the panic train now. Any company can look like a superstar during the good times. But real superstars are the ones who get through the tougher times fully intact and with as little damage as possible. Last quarter while the PC and smartphone market was wallowing a bit Apple somehow managed to more than hold their own. This wasn’t by accident.

The verb deliberate means to engage in long and careful consideration. So cook is saying the considerations for hiring people will be longer and more careful. That seems clear and sensible to me.

That should always be the case…. No?  It seems more like ceo double talk that really means - we have slowed or stopped hiring.  Whatever… :)

Or, just like every other corporation right now, they are doing a freeze because of the economic downturn coming. Literally every company is doing this right now. Has nothing to do with what you said.
