Twitter has started rolling out an update to its iOS app bringing Twitter Blue up to $8, a feature that also enables users to gain the famous blue checkmark of verification.

Surfacing in the App Store, Twitter version 9.34.3 states the update adds "great new features to Twitter Blue," with more on the way "soon."

The key change of the update is an alteration to Twitter Blue, which will now cost $7.99 per month. As part of Twitter Blue, you will also be able to display the blue checkmark "just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you already know," the release notes state.

Twitter Blue with verification is available on iOS in the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, the notes specify.

At the time of publication, while it is possible to purchase the upgraded Twitter Blue, it doesn't appear that anyone has been verified by the app yet.

The update also hints at other changes that are also being worked on. The list includes "Half the ads & much better ones," with those "supporting Twitter in the battle against the bots" set to get a "reward" of fewer ads that are also "twice as relevant" to the user.

Subscribers will also get to post longer videos to the platform, and get "priority ranking for quality content." It is explained that the user's content "will get priority ranking in replies, mentions, and search," which will help "lower the visibility of scams, spam, and bots."

The fee increase is part of new owner Elon Musk's attempt to change the revenue of Twitter, an operation that has already resulted in mass layoffs.

Originally Musk wanted $20 per month for verification, but following a thorough discourse on the service with prominent users, the lower fee of $8 was adopted.

So what if the scams are what’s getting the replies, mentions and searches?

I think the only thing being verified is that anyone who purchases Twitter Blue is a sucker...

If the only credential required to "earn" a blue checkmark is a willingness to spend 8 bucks a month, what is the point?

Next month will it be $10/mo to add a gold hat to your blue checkmark? Month after that, maybe $15/mo to add red shoes on your checkmark?

I can't wait to see what constitutes a "better ad." Are we talking Budweiser horses kicking footballs? E-Trade baby? Swedish Bikini Team?

One could equally well ask how the view is from your mom's basement....

But seriously. All you did was attempt to display your own superiority stance concerning his own stance. What was the point?

So for a fee you will be able to get, “  priority ranking in replies, mentions, and search”.
So Musk’s idea of Free Speech is that it’s there for people as long as they can pay for it.

    LOL
    Typical Oligarch.

He’s running a bloated company where there’s significant competition in the segment; one he vastly overpaid for it. I’m seeing the Peter Principle at play.

If anything the air up there doesn't smell like the steaming pile of crap at the ground floor of hate and misinformation that will be only what Twitter is about.

Twitter is a sinking ship…losing $4,000,000 a day. Musk will have to pull of a miracle or it will end up in the social media graveyard with MySpace etc…

I would have said: “Good thank you, I sleep a lot better now”. I’ve also deleted my account. Moral or not. I don’t like what Elon stands for. People have the right to, for instance, delete their accounts.

Wait, so instead of paying celebrities and official accounts for providing free content verified to be authentic, he‘s making THEM pay for the privilege of attracting traffic by veracity?

I mean. I guess it goes both ways, but has Musk really not understood how Twitter works?

Are the added functions worth the monthly cost?

it’s looks like the ad vs ad free model offered by some podcasts and other streamers. Shrug.

I’ve not found Twitter as useful for news recently while Facebook still has a lot of informational content: many of the national parks, wildlife refuges, museums and other such institutions I’m interested post solid, timely, information via their Facebook pages.

I think this charge will return Twitter to its original purpose.
