There is a new report out about the world's fastest 5G mobile devices, and the iPhone 14 Pro family sits in the top spot in most countries.

The speed test provider released a Tuesday report to examine 5G performance data in 10 countries. These countries have the highest number of connected mobile devices, according to GSMA.

Specifically, the analysis looks at the five fastest popular 5G devices in a given country. Devices had to have a market share greater than or equal to 0.5% of all devices and a minimum sample size of 100.

Ookla includes Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Vietnam.

5G iPhones are fast

The study reveals that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max were the fastest 5G devices in the US. They had a median 5G download speed of 177.21 Mbps and 175.08 Mbps, respectively, during quarter three of 2022.

Here, Apple's smartphones edged out the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, which had 162.50 Mbps, while the Galaxy S21+ 5G and Galaxy S22 Ultra rounded out the top five at 140.06 Mbps and 137.42 Mbps, respectively.

In the UK, iPhone models took up all five spots for the country's fastest 5G devices. There was no statistically significant fastest device, but the iPhone 14 Pro Max had a median 5G download speed of 171.24 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was at 165.49 Mbps, the iPhone 14 Pro at 158.24 Mbps, the iPhone 13 mini at 157.42 Mbps, and the iPhone 13 Pro came in last at 154.50 Mbps.

Various iPhone models appeared in eight of ten countries, except China and the Philippines. They weren't all the latest iPhones, either.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 models appeared in some countries in Ookla's testing, including Vietnam, South Africa, and Germany.

Wait. What? Could one of resident trolls please explain this? Doesn’t the iPhone use the same Qualcomm 5G modems as Samsung and Pixel. Are the Apple Silicon SOCs that much better? Does Android suck? What’s goin on here?

Likely a combination of antenna design, noise control in the board and amplifier designs, software, etc.

Yup, super fast 5G with TMOBILE. I still use Iphone 13 Pro as company phone, 5G speed is night and day

14 Pro is a huge upgrade just in 5G speed alone

Love T-Mo. REally fast network, and reliable too.

A tad surprised that the iPhone came out on top in only 5 of the 10 countries. So in half of the world other phones are faster? The iPhone 14 doesn't place at all in some markets.

If the Networks are true 5G, iPhone 14 Pros will be way faster . I have personally tried it in. USA and Japan

I could be wrong but are you certain the Picel and Samsungs are using  the latest Qualcomm? When Samsun came out, I don’t think the newest Qualcomm was ready yet?

    What's going on here?

You didn't read the Ookla article.

    https://www.ookla.com/articles/fastest-5g-mobile-devices-black-friday-cyber-monday-2022

It is for Q3 2022 and the fastest iPhone median download result was 344mbps (Brazil - iPhone 13 Pro Max). It did not top the Brazil ranking though.

For uploads that model in that market didn't shine either, being topped (by a huge margin) by the Motorola Moto G 5G Plus (which also took first place in downloads). The iPhone was severely lacking when it came to upload performance.

Apple sits in a protective bubble in the US where Huawei and other Chinese brands have little or no presence. In the absence of real competition (both in terms of infrastructure and devices) it shouldn't surprise you that it did well. It should be noted that it looks like 5G infrastructure in the US is not giving good results.

Moving to China though, things change radically. Apple didn't get into the top 5 and even the two year old Mate 30 was in the top 5 ranking. Current Huawei 5G phones do not ship with 5G.

But more importantly there is a line that pops up very often in the Ookla article: "no statistical winner".

Given that most phones were using Qualcomm modems you would expect to see a pretty flat performance line for basic performance from generation to generation of that hardware.

Also there are other variables such as infrastructure and the configuration of that infrastructure and the non-modem variables on the devices themselves (antenna, algorithms, file systems, media etc)

To be honest the article just doesn't mean much at all.

So I've answered my own question from earlier:
Reading the report itself reveals that the Pixel 7's had not yet been released when the study was done so they couldn't have been included. It also explains why the iPhone 14 wasn't in the mix at all in some countries; it was not available at the time the data was collected.

Looking at YouTube videos with side-by-side comparisons of 5G data speeds it does appear the new Pixels are outperforming the iPhone 14's though. Anyone can search them up if they're so inclined.

    No they do not.

FWIW the iPhone 14 Pro download speeds are surpassed by both the Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung S23 which are not using Qualcomm.
