Apple resurrects full-size HomePod with updated acoustics

Almost two years after it discontinued its original HomePod, Apple has launched a new version in the same size, with the same form factor, but improved audio and better Siri integration.

Apple dropped the original HomePod in March 2021, saying that it intended to focus on the then-new HomePod mini instead. Now the new HomePod will be available in stores and online from February 3, 2023.

"Leveraging our audio expertise and innovations, the new HomePod delivers rich, deep bass, natural mid-range, and clear, detailed highs," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a statement. "With the popularity of HomePod mini, we've seen growing interest in even more powerful acoustics achievable in a larger HomePod."

{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"VideoObject","name":"Introducing the all-new HomePod | Apple","description":"A powerful, high-excursion woofer and beamforming tweeters create room-filling sound. HomePod senses its surroundings and automatically adapts audio for where it's placed. Advanced computational audio, powered by Apple silicon, optimizes acoustic performance. Spatial Audio directs music with great precision, surrounding you in sound. It all comes together for the ultimate home audio experience. Apple says that the new HomePod "offers advanced computational audio for a groundbreaking listening experience, including support for immersive Spatial Audio tracks."

The design is chiefly the same visibly, but internally it includes a U1 Ultra Wideband processor, as found in the HomePod mini. This means it gains the same Hand Off ability to let users start a song on iPhone and finish it on the HomePod.

As before, two HomePods can be used as a stereo pair. However, Apple notes that the two have to be the same type -- it's not possible to pair a new HomePod with an original one.

From some time "later this spring," HomePod will be able to listen with Sound Recognition, and send a notification to a user's iPhone if sounds like a smoke alarm are detected. It also has a built-in temperature and humidity sensor that means users can have HomePod trigger automations, such as turning on a room's fans when it's hot.

Apple says that when Siri is used via the HomePod to control an accessory that "may not visibly show a change, like a heater, or for accessories located in a different room," the HomePod will now play a confirmation tone.

The company also confirms that the new HomePod supports Matter.

Preorders begin today, and the HomePod will be available in white and "midnight" colors, from February 3, 2022. It costs $299.

Damnit, I just got my Mini for $85 in November. But if I  bought this one I wouldn’t have been able to travel abroad with it

"Protecting customer privacy is one of Apple’s core values. All smart home communications are always end-to-end encrypted so they can’t be read by Apple, including camera recordings with HomeKit Secure Video. When Siri is used, the audio of the request is not stored by default. These features give users peace of mind that their privacy is protected at home."

Too late. I bought Sonos SLs for Christmas when they went on sale for $329 a pair. Super happy with them with no microphones on the speakers.

Just ordered a pair, which’ll mean some shuffling around, but I don’t mind a bit. (I’ve so been hoping for these.) They’ll replace the OG pair, which will be moved to the office. The mini pair now in the office will go to the guest bedroom. Weird part is, I’ve also kept an ancient iPod Hi-Fi in the kitchen. Hooked it up originally to an old AirPort Express and once I went to Eero, to a Belkin Soundform Connect receiver dongle. Gotta say, it’s been an amazingly reliable AirPlay speaker. A testament to Apple quality, it still sounds as good as it did when it I bought it new 16 years ago. Hope the HomePods prove to be just as durable!

FINALLY!  Apple’s most underrated device ever :(

trouble is for some reason apple don’t sell HomePods of any kind in the UAE so I’ll have to import;  When I get them, my existing HomePod Gen 1 stereo pair can go in the bedroom and my mini stereo pair in the kitchen.

Until Apple fixes the “hey Siri” failings of their HomePod, I won’t buy this. I’m happy with the sound of my old ones, but Siri is virtually unusable. I have to turn it off. Whenever I use it when my iPhone is nearby or wearing my watch, the HomePod takes over, but the HomePod can’t do some of the requests that the iPhone can perform, making it useless, so I just turn off that functionality on the HomePod. Even lifting my watch, or unlocking my iPhone doesn’t work of the the time, the HomePod still takes over, making my request not performable.  I really do not understand why Apple won’t allow something like “hey HomePod” instead of hey Siri for everything.

I had the impression the Mini version did not have Bluetooth, which made it hard to use for me as I travel a lot and wanted to bring it along without hooking to Hoel wifi.

This gives me hope we'll see a $199 sale at Best Buy one of these days. I'll be in for at least one at that point.

Although apparently the large HomePod did have Bluetooth 5.0, you could not use it to play music…. So if someone came to your house with a phone that is not from Apple, they could not share their music. The biggest reason not to get one.

Still hoping they will now enable setup - 2 HomePods as soundbar + subwoofer + dolby atmos + 2 HomePod minis as rear surround speakers. That would make it for me 😎

Why would that matter? If they wanted me to hear something, they could just tell the HomePod to play it.
Not really concerned with how my home interacts with visitor's devices.

Is "midnight" the same as the old model's color? Thought it was black, but I really don't remember.
Also, I wonder if the improved audio a software or hardware? If software, will the original and new models sound the same after the next firmware update?

    Just saw that...
"Creating a HomePod stereo pair requires two of the same model HomePod speakers, such as two HomePod mini, two HomePod (2nd generation), or two HomePod (1st generation)."

Very excited by this announcement! I have the original HomePod and it works great. Can it be paired for stereo with the newer model announced today?
