House Judiciary subpoenas Tim Cook & rest of big tech about alleged collusion

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) has subpoenaed Big Tech executives to try to discover if they colluded to suppress free speech.

Apple CEO Tim Cook
Apple CEO Tim Cook

The Committee is seeking documents and commucations from the CEOs of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft to see if the companies worked with the federal government to censor content on their platforms. The Committee says it has repeatedly attempted to work with the companies since December, but they did not "adequately comply" with the requests.

The subpoenas require Sundar Pichai, Andy Jassy, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckberg, and Satya Nadella to turn over all requested documents and communications by March 23, 2023. According to The Wall Street Journal, it's a probe to determine if the companies censored viewpoints on issues such as COVID-19 policy that disagreed with White House policy.

However, in November, Apple CEO met with GOP lawmakers that included Ohio's Jim Jordan, California's Darrel Issa, and Washington's Cathy McMorris Rogers. At the time, it wasn't clear what was on the agenda.

Notably, the Committee didn't request information from Twitter CEO Elon Musk, even though it's a popular social network. However, Jordan has publicly voiced his support for Musk in the past.

Many Republicans have claimed that Big Tech companies limit speech from conservatives on their platforms, stifling their views on various topics. For example, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) wrote an open letter to Cook, accusing Apple of helping China to suppress free speech.

"[U]nder your leadership, Apple has time and again assisted the Chinese Communist Party in surveilling and suppressing the basic human rights of the Chinese people," he wrote. "At the same time, it appears that Apple might be importing this model of speech control to the United States: reports indicate that your company might deplatform Twitter from the App Store as a consequence of the free speech policies implemented by new ownership."

But Apple reportedly never considered removing Twitter from the App Store, although there was some public concern that the company intended to.

Notably, the Committee didn't request information from Twitter CEO Elon Musk”

How to say, not a serious hearing on the topic while not saying, “we’re just posing”.

This is likely to end in as big a fiasco for House Republicans as the Twitter/FBI hearing was.

Well, let’s see if the Republicans can prove these platforms are intentionally suppressing conservative speech like they claim. There’s a big difference between censoring hate speech and legitimate conservative speech.

Gym Jordan and the other new guard GOPers aren’t interested in governing. They’re only interested in trolling.

By these actions, the GOP seems to be (inadvertently) implying that there's little difference between the two.

I'm not sure where to find "legitimate conservative speech" after William F. Buckley was buried.

It will be a colossal waste of time, the lame brain congressman’s have already answered the questions, it does not matter what Tim Cook says or what anyone else says it will never be enough, it will be like talking to an imbecile.

William F Buckley was a man on the island within the conservative movement even in the 1970s and 80s, and even though his show was on PBS, many conservatives hated PBS, even though PBS showed, better quality shows than the commercial stations at that time and still do frankly.

Yes, I grew up in a very conservative household and Buckley was an icon. Even now, though I disagree with much of what he stood for, I still admire, and try to mirror his use of language. He was brilliant in that.

The new GOP motto should be the same as the late, lamented Mythbusters motto: "Failure is always an option."
Or as Dirty Harry put it so well, "Go ahead, make my day."

You heard it here first: this GOP strategy of racism, xenophobia, homophobia, misogyny, vengeance and retaliation is going to result in a fatal (for them) Blue Tsunami in 2024.
We will see. Mid terms were promising, but there’s another two years of voter suppression and gerrymandering. I would love to see a true blue tsunami clean the place out. But I won’t hold my breath.

While they’re at it, subpoena AT&T/DirectTV executives to find out why

Wondering how this witch hunt (that didn’t include Twitter or *Truth* Social) is going to fix inflation, the budget deficit, or lower healthcare costs.

    “Seems to imply”?
Doesn’t get more concrete than that. You must be right. I mean correct.

The classic fishing expedition. They know the premise for wanting to see the communications is fake. They're just hoping to find something embarrassing that they can leak.

Why don’t they ask him why his otherwise progressive company is so nineteenth century in it’s attitude toward labor unions. His recent memo to employees could have come from the desk of one of the robber barons who called out the armed goons against strikers in the 1800s. “Think Different” Apple. Make unions your partners like in Germany, not your enemy, like every other corporate knee- jerker.

Meanwhile in Australia - Conservative politicians and their staff have admitted they actively used conservative friendly media including bot armies on FB and Twit to discredit people (invading their privacy if required) who were getting public traction pointing out a pet program of theirs was completely illegal.

    In short...
Conservatives - "people with supported and correct information are getting some air time.... this can not continue!"

If there are any real conservatives it might help them to distance themselves from at least the most obvious grifters.
