PETA urges Hamburg, N.Y. to change name
April 22, 2003 _|_ HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) -- A national animal rights group has offered Hamburg officials $15,000 to change the town's name to Veggieburg.
"The town's name conjures up visions of unhealthy patties of ground-up dead cows," said Joe Haptas, spokesman of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, in a letter faxed Monday to Hamburg Supervisor Patrick Hoak.
PETA offered to supply area schools with $15,000 worth of non-meat patties for the name change.
"Our offer is serious as a heart attack," Haptas said.
_Hoak immediately declined.
"With all due respect, I think it's a delicacy in our community," he said about hamburgers. "We're proud of our name and proud of our heritage."
The Buffalo suburb, named Hamburg since 1812, claims to be the birth place of the American culinary staple. Hamburg commemorates the birth of hamburgers at the annual Burgerfest.
In 1996, PETA proposed that the Hudson Valley town of Fishkill change its centuries-old name to Fishsave, since the group believed the name conjured up violent imagery of dead fish.
The town was named by Dutch settlers in the early 1600s. "Kill" is the Dutch word for "stream."

These guys have the best of intentions, and I can't fault them for that, but...honestly...
just keeping their name out there seeing how much ink they can get.
When asked which came first, the town or the sandwich, the proverbial chicken or egg, PETA spokespeople also mentioned their campaign to change the carnivorous aphorism to "the soy or the tofu."
i think peta's strategy is the same.

Actually, there was a big article in the New Yorker a week or two ago demonstrating that PETA is actually extremely powerful. Accusations by the group lead to their targets praising animals.
That said, their entire reason for existing is to think up and execute extreme stunts that get a lot of press. It actually serves a vital function that does benefit the cause greatly. Think about it.

One of the worst things they have done however is ban the horse slaughter industry in America. I know this sounds good, but the number of dangerous, unrealiable horses, that should be put to sleep, that are still being ridden, and kept by owners unable to get rid of them is very high. There are horses at my stables that could well be headed to canada, now that its outlawed in the U.S. I probably sound cruel, but its the best thing for these animals that hurt themselves and humans frequently.

good point giant! it's like in negotiations, you want a million dollars so you ask for five million.....they think you're insane and say "well we'll give you a million...."

Personally, I'd much rather support a mainstream, intelligent, reasonable group like the Nature Conservency. They play by the rules to get things done, instead of pulling dumb stunts like this.

i don't think anyone at peta is trying to change anyone's minds, they are just trying to mobilize those that agree with them.

No, actually. I'm not denying that people label things as such. I think I'm quite alone in my views that political correctness is a made-up euphemism for doing the right thing. There are no good examples or bad examples of it. We shouldn't judge anything on whether it's "politically correct." We should judge something on its own merit.
Call me crazy, but I think that's the best way.
