I think the Shiites in Iraq ought to stop beating themselves now, and focus instead on heading directly to PETA HQ and beating the crap out of the powers that be there....

From NYT (excellent visual aids there, go see them):

To mark the anniversary of the killing of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Shiites in Karbala beat themselves to atone for the guilt of their ancestors who failed to save Hussein.

Yeah but in the end you are still insane.

Peta: noble cause; bad implementation. They should concentrate on early education instead of trying to change the minds of people already set in their ways (dietetically) and they should focus more on the prevention of animal cruelty.

But think about vegetarianism in general. Homo sapiens rose up above their animal counterparts because of the meat in their diet. It help their brains develop and grow to the point where they were different psychologically and mentally superior to their animal brethren. I used to be vegetarian but a basic study into the history of the human species and diet will show the importance of meat in the diet. In short; meat is yummy!

You have to work in a big company some time, or perhaps a very liberal university. Two very different scenarios of "political correctness" gone wrong. The whole point of pointing out "political correctness" is when it isn't correct, not on its merits, anyway. I think we're differentiating between trying to do the right (correct) thing, and giving it lip service only.

Anyhoo, on topic, I know exactly what PETA is trying to do with tactics like these, like Greenpeace and other "gorilla" activist groups, but as has been said elsewhere around here, the message is in the means, not the ends. I have plenty of respect for their aims at least to a fair degree (though the dogmatic tone is a turn-off), but the means of getting the message out is just kind of silly, sometimes -- sometimes inadvertently -- the means are offensive too. This isn't one of those cases, but the whole chickens = Jews/Jews = chickens fiasco was one such case.

It's amazing how sensitive some people are in some respects and not at all in others.

No one ever said you can't be hot AND dumb.

And I'm not sure the message gets through after the 13 year old kid finishes jerking off.

PETA actually does get things done. They have these outrageous stuff and then in the background, they what they really want: the ethical treatment of animals. I was listening to NPR when they were talking about PETA's successful campaign to get farmers to have better conditions for their animals. They put the pressure on McDonalds to do something about it. McDonalds did and the farmers got better. They are immensely powerful. And they have some hot spokespeople, as well.

edit: here's a link to the story. Whatever they're doing is working.

I do recall The Go-Go's (within the past 5-6 years...MUCH hotter now that they're a bit older and all) posing for one of those "I'd rather show my beaver than wear one" PETA ads.

I thought that was pretty nice. They looked good, all five of them standing there in their birthday suits with a strategically placed banner covering their jingle-jangles.

PETA vandalized a pile of labs at our university a few years ago. released the test subjects in a field.

they found them all the next day dead due to predation and exposure.

I'm not out to 'get' anyone. Make a claim and back it up, that's all I ask. If I ever claim someone is using a straw man argument, prove me wrong. But because when I've made that accusation I've been correct, you now try in vain to undermine the concept.

    Wow. Intelligent.
