Time Machine taking a lot of time to back up

Recently, and in particular since the arrival of macOS Sonoma, Time Machine (on my 2019 iMac) has become terribly slow, taking up to half an hour or more for each cycle of back ups. They do not appear to be larger than before.
Can anyone report the same behaviour?

    Right after updating to macOS Sonoma backups now take an extremely long time to complete.  This is using a 12 core M2 Max processor.  My previous Mac, a mid-2011 Core i7 iMac took a fraction of the time backing up similar amount of files.
