OS 9 TCP/IP: "Use 802.3"?

What is this checkbox is OS 9's TCP/IP Panel?





802.3 is Ethernet. What would I want this UNCHECKED?





I just realized that I have NEVER seen a Mac OS 9 box with this box checked....

    I just did a google search... apparently the "Use 802.3" checkbox needs to be checked when using a particular Linksys wireless router... making it effectively incompatible with OS X which doesn't support 802.3. I still don't know what 802.3 actually does, but the page is here.

    802.3x are the specs for Ethernet media in the lower parts of the OSI model



    to me "use 802.3" means use Ethernet. I dont get it.

    Actually, there are some differences between classic Ethernet and 802.3 and everybody uses Ethernet. Don't check that checkbox.

    IEEE 802.3 refers to the Carrier sense multiple access/collision detect subgroup of the IEEE 802 project.

    In otherwords - ethernet.

    I suppose if you wanted to get pedantic about it then apple should reword the checkbox as I assume all apples are 802.3 compatible.
