I made the 80% battery max with Automate and an intelligent plug on my iPhone 14. But I truly don’t understand, as this is a simple software addition, why Apple doesn’t add this to all recent phones.
Indeed. I have a Shortcut that alerts me when it hits 80%. If I hear it, I unplug the charger. It shouldn’t be so hard.
I gave apple feedback saying allow trigger charging on hold via a Shortcut. What they did, six months later, is add a whole UI for it to JUST their flagship phone.
Why are Apple not bringing the 80% limit option to iPhone 14 or earlier? The hardware will put charging past 80% on hold due to heat or continuity camera streaming, so why not give the user that choice like on iPhone 15?
oh, yes, that’s right. Another one of those nudges to upgrade my hardware…
Unless you’re an Apple hardware engineer I doubt you’re in a position to speculate on what sort of comms or feedback monitoring or whatever may make features like these not an option or unreliable on older models.
You don’t need to be an Apple engineer to know that if the phone can put charging on hold when continuity camera streaming, it could do it at other times too. See example from August 2023:

Phones past a certain age, I think it was the iPhone 12, have a different gas gauge chip set that may not like never seeing 100% state-of-charge. Many gas gauge chips rely on seeing 100% to re-calibrate the capacity of the battery.
Who the fuck wants to only charge their phone to 80%, even when the thing is still operating normally?!?! That is the dumbest thing Apple has ever added. Some self-flagellating nonsense for people who prefer to live like their phone is already 5 years old from day one.
Just use the phone like a normal person for a couple of years, then trade it in for a new one. Never look at nor think about the battery once the entire time.
I do
Me too. I have the 15 Max and I'm usually near a charger, so 80% is fine most of the time. If I'm going on a trip or something, I can always turn this off and charge to 100%.
My iPhone Xs, which I am now into my 6th year with is showing 80% battery Maximum Capacity. It seems less than that at times!!! Is anyone lower than 80% or does it just stop at 80%?
Used to upgrade my phones, yet even dumb phones every 4 years. Soit's been iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and now iPhone Xs. 4 years for those first 2 iPhones. I was going to upgrade to the iPhone 15, but this phone still works just fine and I didn't see any reason yet to upgrade. However, the battery life isn't the best these days and I have no 5G service or T-Mobiles newer band and whatever else on this phone. I decided to just go for a 6th year.
The iPhone 4, with Apple's first custom CPU, the A4 CPU, that 4th year was pretty bad. The major firmware updates every year made it slower and slower. That 4th year, sometimes I wanted to throw the phone against the wall and break it. It was SSSLLLLLOOOWWWWW!!! The iPhone 6 was better by the 4th year. As Apple really improved their CPU's over the years, so now it's overkill when the phone comes out, it has far, far more staying power. Which is why I'm into my 6th year with this iPhone Xs. It still looks perfect. I've also never had a cracked screen.
I’d like to see location services added to the 80% charge maximum. So for example it would only charge to 80% at specified home/office locations, then 100% when travelling and less likely to be near a charger.

Or if they made the switch accessible via Shortcut, we could program whatever scenario suited
