networking..newbie:)
I am connecting..or trying to..my powermac and my powerbook..PM has OS9.1 and the PB has OSX .2.3..I will admit that I am fumbling around in the dark in regards to networking..I am not using a hub ..just a ethernet cable and not a crossover since I was told it wasn't necessary with teh PB abilities..
I am gettibng an I/O error -1072

Which version PowerMac?
Which version PowerBook?
Did you set fixed IP addresses for both computers?
Did you turn on file sharing for either or both computers?
From which computer are you trying to see the other?
Which computer gets the error message? Under what circumstances?

fair enough
PM SP 500 OS 9.1
PB 15" 867 OS X2.3
both have fixed IP
file sharing on both
The PM see's the PB but when I try to cannect..I get that error I/O-1072
I was told that you don't need a crossover cable and it even states that in the doc..but..I am so new to OSX
I am sure I am doing something wrong but I'm not sure what..
[B]fair enough
I will give you everything..or should I say ask everything
ON the PB..I got to network
Show:built in Ethernet? or should it something else
TCP/IP correct
configure: Using..manual? DHCP? etc
anythign else?
then I go to sharing
computer name ...named
services..personel file sharing on
anything else?
then I got to the PM
file sharing..turned on
shared items picked
anything else
As for getting the sharing to work, have a look at this Knowledge Base Article.
Not something I've done myself, but that document looks pretty much like it has everything you'll need.
[B]You certainly don't need a crossover cable: the PowerBook's Ethernet port can work out what's at the other end.

thanks Overhope..everything is working now..kind ofnot sure what I did differently but I can now mount drives from my PM on the PB desktop..can't do it the other way though..but that doesn't really matter.
