Apple Macintosh and the DRM issue

So Apple has finally given in to the dark side. Or were they already there (you can't copy music easily off the ipod, e.g.)?

Anyway, the fact that you can keep your music on three computers only is just frightening me. Really, chills me to the bone. Also, you cannot burn a playlist more than ten times? What is that all about?

Two small things maybe, but two more. This is, I like to think, still my computer, and I want to steal music with it as much as I can.

(for evaluation, and trashing it within 24 hours...

).

I cannot, tonight, come to terms with a computer that will begin to bug me in these teeny weeny ways. You cannot do this, you cannot do that. **** it. If I buy a song, you bet your ass I am gonna burn a thousand copies of it, and sell them through an ad in my local paper.

I'm exaggerating my part, but is this not what many here have been shouting about when it comes to MS: the DRM IN the system. Big Brother, albeit a passive one, will be WATCHING US TOO!

And I'm so afraid, cuz I've done so much wrong...

And in case you were wondering: I think musicians whining about getting a couple o' grand less for their albums these days should be shot.

Actually, I was watching the stream, it may be only music you purchased may have that limitation. and you probably could always burn it to a cd, delete it, and re-rip it to get around(or just burn it, then rip it to a 'forbidden' machine. But the point with the microsoft DRM, was a lot worse. if you ripped a cd, you could only play those songs on that 1 machine(unless you purchased an 'additional' license for it, and they also usually would not let you burn either. the apple way is probably the best way so far.

you can burn the songs to a cd...so you can play your music in the car, on your stereo, at a friends house...

as for burning a playlist only 10 times.....i have never burned a playlist more than twice...why would you need to do it more than ten times unless you are downloading an album and then burning it many times to sell on the street??

Fortunately, DRM just got a long-deserved kick in the crotch. LINKAGE Finally, a judge said that a program that, as a side effect, could be used in a illegal fashion can't be held responsible for it. This is a MAJOR foothold, and maybe the first, for "the little guys" to start fighting the DMCA laws.

Er... sorry, I may be clueless, but does iTunes now restrict you from acquiring MP3s by whatever means and restrict you from playing, burning, what-have-you?

Clearly, Apple is trying to find middle-ground between obeying copyrights and staying within fair use rights of users. Somepeople on either side of the issue I'm sure feel that any compromise is no compromise at all, that anything Apple does to one side of their point of view works against their position. Apple is trying to acknowledge both at the same time, so one may see it as a pandora's box either way.

or you could just get around this limitation by adding "blank" files to the end of playlists to get a fresh 10

No, the only limitations seem to be on the songs you purchase from the store.

That's what I thought...

See, I'm not clueless... I was fairly sure that iTunes had not been changed that radically. So the P2P train keeps on keeping on...

And that could be cured if distributors other than the "Big 5" could "get in." Independents and smaller, international distributors need access to systems like this.

Well, if you all live under one roof, you could stream the tunes to each other (which I plan to do--I have 4 Macs, but I keep all my songs on one drive and will stream to the others).

Secondly, since you live outside the U.S., you won't have to worry about it for the time being.

That will probably be added in, in time.. they probably wanted to do 'home land' first, and get the majors on, because without any of that, it isn't gonna go anywhere else either.

Hi,

i don't get how they check if you have copied the file once or twice?

Is the info saved on the machine I downloaded with, is it saved in the file, somewhere else?

Am I only able to copy the files from mac no. 1 to no. 2+3, or can I copy from mac 1 to 2 and then from 2 to 3. How does mac 1 know that mac 3 got a copy from mac 2? How is all this working if you deauthorize mac no. 1 and want to copy all files to mac no. 4?

Questions over questions!

the songs don't get counted, the playlists do.
