Probably not even a new PowerMac (demonstration possibly - even probably, but I don't think it will be launched).

Yeah. Exactly what I meant. Possible demonstration of new PowerMac with launching in aug/sept. The only problem with this strategy is that it would probably cannibalize sales of the current powermacs (as if it can get any worse ).

    1. Panther (duh)

    2. possible PowerMac updates

    3. an iTunes Music Store update is almost certain, with slim possibility of Windows service announcement (the USB2 kit is set to ship in June)

I think that would be a bit early for an update (what exactly would be updated?). Windows service announcement is as you said slim, and I don't think that it will happen before aug/sept.

well, if the service is a success (as much as could be expected in two months anyway...), i suspect it would be talked about

updates would include: how many people are using it, individual song vs. album download ratio, and how many songs the service has expanded too.

believe me, Steve will be talking up the service ANY chance he gets.

what has a windows service announcement to do with wwdc?

    a. nothing

    b. euh... nothing

    c. surprice: nothing

wwdc has to do with software development for the apple-platform not for promoting windows options.

so what we will see at wwdc: i'm with kroehl sans dick

nothing other than the fact that Apple is doing some good business and possibly attracting new customers. show me one developer that isn't interested in getting new customers to the platform. other than quark that is

Steve Jobs: "see this new music store we've got? only Apple could come up with this."

makes the mac a rather enticing platform, eh?

besides, Apple has used WWDC for "non-traditional" announcements before. to paraphase you, what do displays have to do with WWDC? nothing. yet the all-LCD announcement was made there.

i think he has more important stuff to show off than a music service... it's a developers conference, so what about osx 64bits? isn't that enough to talk about?

this music service is a gadget but not something developers are waiting for. all very nice for apple but not something a developer of soft(-or hard)ware for the apple platform wants to be bored with.

if you don't think SJ will be talking about the music service at WWDC, you've got a little something loose upstairs

SJ will be talking about it at ANY and ALL appearances he makes for the next six months. bet on it.

fair enough. though i think he just might... if the mac only store gets to be a huge success. they might push it out a bit early then.

more people using apple products = more people thinking about buying a mac (the sooner before the holiday season the better...) = more people buying a mac = happier developers.

why should you buy a mac if they announce a windows service?

even hear of the trojan horse? yeah.

more people using ANY type of Apple product will help to increase the main platform.

say, for example, some windows user is used to the horrible mess that is WMP, Real, etc. they hear about this new service from Apple and decide to give it a try. it works so well, that they start to think "hmm... if this works so well, i wonder what else they have to offer?"

so, the next time they're at the mall, they stop by the Apple Store and play around, something they would never have thought about before.

think about it for a second. seriously. that's the plan.

besides... windows service = more revenue for Apple. you think developers don't care about the financial stability of Apple?

I wouldn't be surprised if Panther was demoed on a "black box" with unsubtle hints about 64 bit compatibility... but no DIRECT mention of the 970.

Why? Hardware isn't the point of the WWDC but a little tease of 64 bit hardware will turn the attendees to jelly.

The actual introduction of Apple's 64 bit hardware will be by special event and only when the computers are actually ready to ship.

you're probably right i can just see SJ lifting a black cloth from a mystery cube shaped box to reveal (gasps)......a black cube and telling us he can't talk about it yet.

you have a point and i admit your right about this, but it does only work for the usa, because most of the potential music service market is in the rest of the world but there are no so called applestores at all.

wwdc is in 2 months. apple needs more time to show the music industry that their music service is worth gold.

why do you think only apple users have access to this service now? and iirc only the north american users. apple needs this time to "beta test" it, to show it's foolproof, that it works. later in january 2004 wintell-owners can come and try for them selfs. when it doesn't work out before january 2004, the applefaithfull won't burn down cupertino and screaming for job's head... but windows users might...

This thread seems to have strayed from its original topic but I guess that means all is well. I believe it's important for Apple to make the service available for Windows before MS comes up with their own (half-assed) service. This may prevent some new Mac sales but it is still revenue, and revenue that will not go to MS.
