I wonder if Tim is regretting that $1m bribe? or wondering if he should have made it $100m?

So yeah, it's a good idea to build things in America, so that Americans can benefit
It is a terrible idea. There is a limit to the number of Americans. You need to maximize the value delivered per citizen instead of having companies fighting for the same workers causing inflation. Having foreigners assemble stuff locally and taking the profits to USA is pretty smart. USA wouldn't be richer if cigars had to be handmade in Iowa. Spend your time where value is created.

Smart man. An ethical nation can’t compete with third world slave labor. Something msjor has to be done to turn things around. The status quo - or wasting taxpayer dollars on bribing these companies is why we’re in financial trouble.

Trump isn’t a blanket case guy. He will weave through the tariffs and decide what will help Americans and American companies and what will hurt. I imagine he and cook have this sorted already.
Taiwan isn't a "third world country" nor does TSMC depend on "slave labor". Your willingness to broadcast your ignorance is astounding.

It all comes down to labor. Are American companies willing to bring mass manufacturing back to America? A typical Chinese Foxconn factory employs 100,000 to 200,000 workers and pays them roughly $2-3 an hour depending on overtime. While the base shift at Foxconn is usually 8 hours, overtime of 2-4 hours is common.

The average minimum wage in America is $7.50. Now with all these deportations happening, what American is willing to work at a factory, for 8-12 hours a day, making minimum wage to manufacture iPhones?
There are so many unemployed American adults. I think there are plenty who’d see these jobs as answered prayers.
Unemployment is at historic lows and has been for sometime and the United States doesn't have the labor for to manufacture iPhones at the scale Apple makes them. Production lines like that required skilled workers (engineers) at a level that we don't have.

I don't think the administration understands the global semiconductor supply chain. And even if you could find people with the skills to work in a fab, the amount of money and time it takes to construct one would mean those tariffs would be in place for many years, making the action somewhat pointless.

Not reported in article: the Arizona chip plant’s chips still must be shipped overseas for packaging, just like other parts in the Apple products. Tim Cook was promoted by Steve Jobs precisely for that expertise. It saved Apple then.
Now, another CEO must be groomed who can assemble products in the USA, and make the most vital parts here too. Just in time for Tim to retire.

Voting for a strong, smart, capable leader is a smart thing to do.
But of course that’s not what Americans did. they voted for a stupid senile man who did terrible damage to the country four years ago and has plans, along with the despicable operatives that are pulling his strings to do even worse this time around.
It's exactly what we did and it's why we have a guy at the helm who is setting htings right fron day one, as we see world leaders falling in line very quickly. It sure beats the last four ears and we dodged a bullet with cackles as well. We should revisit this idea four years from now.
Sure. Next you’ll be telling us he’s personally designing Apple’s M5 and M6 chips, while also composing an opera that he will star in at a surprise Kennedy Center premiere on Tuesday.

I’d say the idiots are the people who after four miserable years of Biden, whose declining health was covered up by the Democrats and media, thought Kamala was worth a vote.  Other idiots are the Californians who voted for Newsome and Bass.  Total failures.

Tim is facing the realities of doing business in China.  Tariffs will force him to confront the China challenge.  Apple could possibly build Mac’s or iPads in the US using lots of automation.  But iPhones still require lots of cheap manual labor which isn’t available in the US.  So Apple will have to accelerate moving more production out of China.  Which will upset the Chinese government to the point they might restrict iPhone sales in China.  A tough situation for Apple.  Trump will keep China from doing anything to Taiwan, which buys TSMC some time.

The GOP is the tax cut/deregulation party. Trump's 1st term featured a $2 trillion stimulus in the form of a tax cut that primarily benefited the wealthy and corporations. And now you have Trump trying to claim he doesn't want to incentivize through tax breaks. It's so transparently false. That's all the GOP/Trump do: claim that tax breaks juice the economy. And it's guaranteed that they'll renew the $2 trillion in cuts from 2017 and add even more on top of it.
Half of the country pays no federal income taxes.  It’s hard to give people who pay no taxes a tax cut.

They (TSMC) do not pay the tax. The American company that imports the product pays the tax, and and they usually pass that increase on to the consumer, resulting in higher prices.

TSMC makes the same amount of money per chip no matter what.

    Trump is an idiot.

you obviously know knowing about economics or the workings of tariffs.  Yes tariffs aren’t paid by the company that produces products.  Trump uses the threat of tariffs as a negotiating tool.  Look at how Columbia changed their decision on accepting the return of illegal Colombian immigrants after Trump threatened them with tariffs.

What happened to open markets? I guess they're okay as long as no one can outperform us.
Do you think China had an open market?

Apple should build its products in the USA. This is no easy feat, as it requires an entire manufacturing ecosystem of makers and suppliers. But still. Apple has the money to make this happen and the patience to stick with it for the 2 decades it would require. Now that would be a legacy Tim Apple could be proud of.

Intel really screwed up. They missed mobile and then missed AI. Not sure how they get back to being pre-eminent.
Agreed but it's the Federal and State governments that need to think about investing in new cities that are centered around manufacturing and fast transportation. There are many successful examples of how that can be done, from Singapore to Shenzhen. The US tends to focus more on privatizing insurance, prisons, healthcare. Terrible ideas! All that does is wrench more money out of their own citizens and implements invasive laws and practices.

If you believe the people who try to assemble a BOM for every Apple product, a 100% tariff on the A18 chip would cost Apple (not TSMC) an extra $45 per iPhone 16. Add in a buck or two for Apple having to deal with the federal customs bureaucracy, and if Apple wanted to pass all that along to the customer, how many people (not TSMC) salivating for the latest model would be deterred by a $50 price increase? Or maybe less, if Apple decides to eat some of it.

Taiwan isn’t was I was referring to. It’s a much broader discussion. As I posted early on here, trump and cook have likely navigated this already.

Steve Jobs birth mom decided to give her baby up however, she later on decided to keep Steve’s sister fathered by the same Syrian student Steve’s biological father she like Steve was an (American at birth), Barack‘s mom however, decided to keep her baby who was also an American at birth…. Steve Jobs and Barack have nothing in common with Elon at birth. Both were American citizens from day one neither were immigrants.
So.. then Nubus was even more wrong than I thought. Great post. Thanks.
    Was it.
seems accurate to me to say 2nd generation being the child of an immigrant parent and most likely having an option to choose between the countries as to where to make their home. Having potential cultural links in both.

they are a citizen but might have options.
    So… citizen then.

    Thanks.
