I'm certain it works out like this:

Trump recinds his 145% tax on Americans for buying Chinese goods because too many Americans don't like paying 145% more for a shopping cart of goods from Costco, Target, Walmart, or Amazon.

President Xi doesn't budge and China doesn't buy as many American made goods ever again.

China will win the battle and show the world that there is a new world powerhouse in control.

China’s economy isn’t exactly in a position of strength right now. Well… no country’s economy will be strong if this continues. But even before all of this, China’s economy wasn’t doing so well. Various structural issues and whatnot.

If Trump removed the American tariffs, Xi would remove the Chinese tariffs as well. Xi doesn’t want to more than double the prices of American goods for Chinese consumers (if he doesn’t have to in order to retaliate against Trump tariffs). Especially since many of the American goods that Chinese consumers buy are food products.

This tariff war isn’t good for any country (America included, China included). The world is just waiting for one man to realize that.

The tariffs, threatened or implemented, have managed to destroy a lot of goodwill around the world for the United States for decades. This will directly affect people's decision to purchase products for US companies. It's already happened in Canada and has been well-covered by the media.

Manufacturing origin is one issue; the other is the conscious boycott of Apple products in other countries as a statement of dissatisfaction.

Tim Cook is -so called- a logstics genius guy.
Let´s see how he can handle this situation.

Why the fuck is he "so-called"? How many fucking decades does someone need to prove their mastery in a field for someone like you to give them a shred of credit for it? He's more than proven that he's a logistics genius at his time at Apple.

That doesn't mean he can magically use logistical mastery to get out of this one. You can't build a new factory tomorrow, or next month, or next year. And most phones are still manufactured in China for a myriad of valid reasons. You can try shifting a % of production, but there's limits, and you can't replace China.  If these tariffs go on for long, there is little that Tim, or anyone can do to stem the upcoming bloodbath.

I understand your in-the-moment visceral reaction to all of this, but… America doing ‘unpopular’ things is nothing new. This is just new for certain countries that aren’t usually directly on the receiving end of America’s unpopular decisions. America has done unpopular things for decades and people have continued to buy American products during those decades.

It’s undetermined if the tariffs have done damage “for decades” (because it’ll take decades for us to know if that is so). It has done some damage for the past few weeks though. That much we can definitely say.

Déjà vu all over again. Last time it was a cluster f*ck inside a dumpster fire. And this time… it’s something worse. Let’s not forget why DT originally turned on China: it was to deflect the stench emanating from his close ties to Russian money and influence. This is vacuous, politics for show. “Look, I’m doing something.” Some people speculate that the idiot thinks that running a trade deficit means that you are in debt to the other country.

Sigh.  We could only hope you are correct ... and all of the likewise idiots can see the failure to truly understand world economics.  In doing so, perhaps manufactures will put "Made in the USA" on ALL products.  I personally agree with your requirement - all products made outside of the US should have in BOLD letters - Made in CHINA (or any other Indo Pacific Country) so we know who they are. Not in tiny print somewhere.  It should be bold and a law demanding it be at least as large as the largest font on the package.

For the other Liberal idiots who do not understand Macro-Economics, Tariffs are a tax on all goods that enter the country.  Each country has them and most are unfair against the US.  The average idiot American expects this "bow down and kiss their a$$ attitude" and demand that the price of a product be as close to free as possible - gotta love Temu.  Meanwhile, prices of American products are too high for consumers in other countries to purchase because of these imposed taxes for our goods entering their country are so high, their final cost is prohibitive for the average consumer.  Farmers, car manufactures, Silicon Vally morons, Energy Suppliers, etc... are all forced then to focus on only the US market - not the WORLD market. Unfair and it MUST be stopped - even if it hurts your poor pitiful pocketbook.  If the price temporarily increases in order to bring world trade fairness, suck it up, become a patriot and stop complaining.

More EU cars (Volvo, Mercedes, BMW) are sold in the US than any other place in the world - including the EU .... and that is their own market.  Mainly because the US has a higher gross income per capital that can afford those types of cars.  But, the secondary issue is that US car manufacturers cannot sell in the EU because the tariff tax on those imports are so high, very very few can afford a US made car.  They, instead, purchase an EU made car.  Likewise in the Arab states - they have placed a tariff so high on US cars and zero on Japanese cars - most drive Toyotas and not Fords.  Good for them ... bad for us.  It is unfair and it has to stop.

Trade deficits have to be normalized to as close to zero as possible.  No liberal seemed to complain about NAFTA/USMCA - but now you complain that we are expanding that effort worldwide - and forcing other countries to play by making our tariffs the same as what they impose on the US.  I don't understand why liberals cannot get on board.  You have to love our country more than you hate Donald Trump.  Presidents come and go - but your country and your patriotism should be forever.

Now, mind you, this will have (we hope) no affect on bringing manufacturing like Apple back to the US (which hopefully NEVER happens).  This is where I break with the current administration.  God help us if manufactures return to the US and start making products in this country.  Cost will more than double.  Unions and American greed will require that American workers be paid at such an exorbitant (usually disguised as "fair living wage") wage and crazy benefits it will in turn cause products made here to increase - rapidly ... it's the reason why most cars are now at the highest they have ever been per average income.  Unions have demanded crazy $100,000 salaries for the employees - FOR LIFE, these cost have been passed to the consumer.  Amazing how everyone complains about the cost of a truck, but doesnt understand why or fight to get those costs lowered.  You idiots complain about the current market environment, while US manufactures rape us.  Make it in Mexico or India or China, where labor is cheap.  When the tariff are reduced to a lower reciprocal amount, which is where we hopefully end up .... manufacturing should be allowed in any market (thats called Capitalism) where the final price is at a reasonable price point that ALL people can afford.

Each tariff other countries impose on US goods is an individual question. Some are abusive and others aren't. Those questions should be negotiated individually, understanding the context for each. Assuming they're all abusive is just incredibly dumb. Just as the US may, for national security or cultural integrity or any of a number of other legitimate reasons, wish to prevent a particular domestic trade or industry from being wiped out by cheap imports, other countries may have the same concerns. That's why we should be negotiating these things individually and carefully, not imposing random ChatGPT-based tariff formulas worldwide.

Trade deficits do not have to be normalized to as close to zero as possible. That's just dumb. It's like saying Kroger needs to buy as much stuff from you as you buy from Kroger. Ideally you will generate enough income from somewhere else to cover what you buy from Kroger, but you're probably not going to be selling all that much to them, unless maybe you're a farmer. If you're a farmer, you should probably be selling more to Kroger than you buy from them. Keeping an even trade balance with them would probably be really bad for you.

For larger trading partners like Canada, there are certainly more opportunities for trade in both directions, but for many others, that's probably not true at all. There are undoubtedly real examples of abusive trade practices (in both directions!), but those should be negotiated directly, not as part of this crazy sledgehammer approach being taken by the current administration. I mean, the blanket 10% minimum tariff being applied to every country (except Russia) is certainly abusive to countries where we have no trade imbalance or even a surplus (a deficit to them), and/or they have no tariffs or other restrictions on us in the first place.

Very few people in Europe want a US-made car regardless of tariffs. They have a reputation for being ugly, inefficient and poorly engineered.

If US manufacturers made a desirable product, they would sell in the EU just fine. Telsa was doing very well before Musk outed himself as a deranged loser.
