Tim Cook marks Memorial Day with remembrance, and a message of gratitude

Apple CEO Tim Cook has marked Memorial Day with a social media post remembering and thanking fallen heroes.

Tim Cook habitually posts to X to mark major holidays and occasions. On May 26, Cook made a post to observe Memorial Day, an annual occasion in the U.S. to honor and mourn fallen U.S. military personnel.

We are grateful for all those who fought for our freedom. On Memorial Day, we reflect on the courage and selflessness of the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The post to X is effectively Apple's quiet honoring of the federal holiday. The main Apple website does not mention the day itself, though it has been used to mark other important dates throughout the year.

    I really wish the United States would designate Memorial Day as a Day of Remembrance rather than a holiday, like Canada and European countries do with similar days of national acknowledgement of significant events. In the US the meaning of Memorial Day and Veterans Day have been diluted into simply being another day off work to take advantage of mattress sales and special deals on Amazon. I know it's only a matter of what you call it, and I don't advocate forcing anyone to shut down their business on days of remembrance, but perhaps more people would take more than one minute to consider what these days mean to all Americans regardless of political affiliation, country of origin or ancestry, or any of the many differences that distinguish us as individuals. I think Tim Cook fully understands the meaning, although posting it on a divisive platform (X) run by a radicalized leader makes me a little squeamish. At least his sentiment is clear.

    Agree fully. I hate seeing “Memorial Day Sale!!” In my inbox. That is plain disgusting.

    There are many actual memorial-type Memorial Day events across the country every year. Events that people are able to attend (and do attend) because of the day off. Sure, some people do some mattress shopping (and that’s fine). But many people do actually go to memorial events on Memorial Day. I’ve been to a few in the past.

    Freedom is not free and never has been.
    Memorial Day should always be a day of remembrance for those who have been killed in defense of our nation - in peacetime and in war.

    Good man, Tim. 

    We all should take the time to be thankful to those who’ve paid the ultimate price in establishing and defending the single brightest beacon of freedom in the entire world. 

    As Apple is a standout in benefitting from such heroic sacrifice, I am blessed to hear such honorable words from the CEO.
