I have faith on the OS X native Disk Warrior than NortonUtilities. I have version 3, 3.5, 4, and 5 of NU, no big changes or improvement.

How and when did Norton get so unreliable?

I remember when it seemed like a decent (though by no means terrific) disk repair and utility program... Norton 4, perhaps, or 5? No longer.
