2 DIFFERENT MACHINES give same error message while installing 10.2.5

My parents just bought two Macs: a used 800Mhz 17" iMac FP, and a new 800Mhz 14.1" Combo iBook. Whenever I try to install 10.2.5 on either of them, they say that it can't because of an error and I should try again.

I've tried this through Software Update's auto install, SU's "Download to Desktop", and even downloading through Apple's site. No matter what, it's a no go. I don't know what to try next.

The iMac has 10.2 installed on it right now, and the iBook has 10.2.3. Both have 256MB RAM. Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you following the upgrade path? Just slapping the 10.2.5 updater on won't work, since it expects elements of every other release to be in place.

Try the Combo update (which will take any version of 10.2 up to 10.2.5), downloadable here.

I guess I wasn't perfectly clear: Been there, tried that, didn't work. I've been trying the Combo Update the whole time, and no dice. Next?

I'd suggest a fresh installation, but I presume the iBook is pretty virgin?

The iBook is new out of the box, and I already did a fresh install of the CDs that came with the iMac. They're as fresh as fresh can be.

Upon further looking on the Apple Knowledge Base and so on, I tried some other ideas to get the stuff installed. No dice STILL. This is really getting frustrating!

I did, however, look at the install log and here's the information it came up with:

I'm checking to see if I can find out what all that means, but if someone -- anyone -- here has an idea, please share. I need to move on in setting all this stuff up for my parents!

EDIT: BOTH machines had the same error log. Is this even my problem, or am I getting something bad from Apple?

I'm not sure what you mean? I've only tried one step: Installing the 10.2.5 Combo Updater. It's not working, and the log shows the error above. I can't find anything on that on Apple's Knowledge Base, so I don't know what else to do.

Bump. Okay, so NOBODY here can help me with this? I've got to update these machines!

Okay, if the Combo Update doesn't work, how about trying all the individual updaters? Hefty downloads, but maybe worth a try?

And there's no need to get shirty if nobody can help: it's not like we're being paid to help out or anything...

Well, I did try the 10.2.4 Combo Updater, but it did the same thing.

What strikes me as odd is that it's happening to BOTH machines. Why would that be? Could my home network have anything to do with that? Do I need to boot from a CD to install the stuff?

I'm just getting a little short because I know this forum doesn't get frequented nearly as much as the others, and nobody seems to be making much of an attempt to help (except you, Overhope, thanks).

Since you have not tried it, you should repair permissions. The error you are getting may go away. Do that using Disk Utility's First Aid tab BEFORE you try a new install. Then try the individual installers. Did you partition your HD? Remember OSX wants to be on the first partition.

    Keep trying...

A friend of mine is having the exact same problem. He has 10.2.0 installed on his Pismo (which he just got today) and it won't install the 10.2.5 updater. I told him to try the 10.2.3 update combo first, and then try 10.2.5. It worked for me, and I also repaired permissions beforehand (although I tried 10.2.5 immediately after repairing permissions and it didn't change anything so I don't think it helped).

for my cobalt web server I HAVE to install the updates from the bottom of the page upwards. Since you are having problems, I would suggest you use this method. Install them one at a time - no combo updates.

Also, check your downloads. It is quite common for them to get corrupted in transit. Try redownloading them again. Failing that, goto your store and ask them if you can get a CD with 10.2.4 or 10.2.5 already on it yet !

    same here - brandnew iBook700, pre-installed 10.2.

tried combo udater 10.2.5. five times - download completed, error installing the software!

    as mentioned above:

    step 1: combo update 10.2.3

    step 2: update 10.2.5.

    why?

    not apple style

I've just spotted the same thing over at macfixit: here's their advice:

    Quote:

Warning: Mac OS X 10.2.5 installer failure with Software Update

This warning should be heeded by all users attempting to install a fresh copy of Mac OS X, then use Software Update to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.2.5.

If install any iteration of Mac OS X prior to version 10.2.3, then attempt to run the automatic Software Update function and install all available items, the application will automatically install every update listed - including several component updates that made their debut after Mac OS X 10.2.3 - and then Mac OS X 10.2.5. In at least a handful of confirmed cases, the Mac OS X 10.2.5 updater will then fail to install. The Mac OS X 10.2.5 combo updater will also fail to take.

We have tagged the problem to QuickTime 6.1.1, but more than one updater may be at fault.

The easiest solution to this problem is to install the 83 MB Mac OS X 10.2.5 combo updater before installing any other items available in Software Update. If it is too late and you have already gotten to the point where the Mac OS X 10.2.5 updater continually fails, try installing the Mac OS X 10.2.3 combo updater first and then move to 10.2.5.

So, if nothing else, we know it's not just CosmoNut's machines at fault.

Well, now we're getting somewhere! I guess I know what to do now. Thanks everybody, for confirming that I'm not the only one with this problem.

    Success!

Installing 10.2.3 and THEN 10.2.5 worked! Thanks everyone. Anybody know why this problem occurred? Apparently it's not all machines, but whatever the problem was it happened on each of our two new machines. Odd.

    And I'm spent.

    Yay! Glad we got there.
