Do people really get THIS exited about a Keyboard?

Other than feel I don't really get too exited myself. It's an input device. Even Keyboards with the Multimedia functions just aren't that much exciting anymore. .02

I want a keyboard with black keys, designed like the one we have now, but with that ultracool backlighting like on Lapzilla. I don't need or want those hairy, glossy multimedia features f.ex. the Logitech keyboards have.

From the context of the thread where it was posted, the above keyboard is clearly a mockup. Blah.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ports in the center back of the keyboard, so that connected cables don't poke at the mouse if it's close to the keyboard.

Actually, if you read the actual thread and article (macrumors.com):

    1) This is not a mock up. It's a photo of an Apple Banner.

    2) The USB ports reportedly do come out the back next to the keyboard cord.

I'd like to think that no modern keyboard would come in a fixed raised position like that. On a flat desk, it defies ergonomics to have your wrists bending backward.

    Apple Updates Next Week?

    Saturday May 03, 2003 04:03 PM

Under comments to an iPod/May 2nd story on Macnn, one anonymous reseller indicates that there will be further updates next week:

Apple is trying hard to get product to their Apple Specialist dealers. We received 16 of the first 17" PowerBooks in the county even before any of the Apple retail stores and any catalog vendors. Apple has in the past screwed the Apple dealers, but I think Apple is working to make this relationship better. Granted it still needs a lot of work, but it's starting to get better. For instance I received word Friday on something that's supposed to happen next week (won't tell you) but it's the first time Apple has actually shared this type of information before they officially announced to the public.

Uhmmmm, excuse me...What does a new keyboard really mean? That's the thrust of the thread, which is why I posted it as such. I don't recall Apple ever releasing "just an updated keyboard." They are usually debuted along with new hardware. Yet there are apparently pictures of this new keyboard hanging on banners in Apple Retail Stores. What does that mean?

As far as the resellers comments on that MacRumors thread, it could mean that the eMac finally gets speed bumped, as has been rumored by ThinkSecret, and is listed as 5-7 days on the Apple Store. Other than that, it could hopefully be that the new 15-inch PowerBook will be announced. The last revision was on November 6th, and this Tuesday will make it 6-months old to the day.

Interesting thing is that a new keyboard would almost certainly come along with a new PowerMac, and thus the 970.

Does seem a bit early for the 970, though. Hmmm....

Here's hoping. With eMac revisions on the way and a possible 15" PB revision, Apple's entire hardware line-up will have been refreshed in little less than a few months. A far cry from the annual updates at the yearly Macworlds.

The image appears to be flipped, note the clip under the shift key and the obviously elongated tab key (third key from the right, compared with the accent key, second key from the right.) Also, there is no enter key (at least one that takes up two normal key spaces.)

Yes it does appear to be flipped. Too bad there isn't a higher quality shot of the "keyboard poster."

WTF. This is really strange. Is it possible that the new eMac is going to be introduced with a new keyboard and mouse??

In my brief digging on MacRumors fora I found the above image posted as a mockup (presumably in a different thread). My visit was short, so my memory could well be off. The front page article certainly states that the ports are indeed in the back, which makes perfect sense. I was just stating my support for such a design decision.

Nonetheless, joek, if you were going to post a picture of a banner in an Apple Store, wouldn't you show at least a tiny bit of the surroundings to put the image in context? I maintain that the above image is a mockup. As Eugene pointed out above, a non-adjustable keyboard like the one pictured makes no sense in a modern environment that is sensitvie to ergonomics. I just don't buy it.

[Edit: The real-life images above were posted while I was angrily typing away. I guess the keyboard does appear on Apple banners. I guess I can just hope that Apple has some trick up its sleave to let me type with a flat keyboard despite initial impression otherwise.]

i know what you are all thinking, why buy a keyboard that can't lay flat

    because...

u can buy the iDesk to go with it!

    *crowd breaks into applause*

oh and about the thread title how about "New Keybaord = New PMac?"

Ha! It is obviously a mock-up, even the above photos. They are just Photoshop hacks.

Notice in the first photo the two guys in the bottom right are within arms length of the woman behind them. Obvously they are far too geeky to get within 10 feet of a woman...

...and with regards to the second photo I have spent the last 4 hours reconstructing the scene with 3D modeling software and I can prove that the guy in the Hawaiian shirt could not possibly be staring at the bald man at the printer!

And besides the banner itself shows an Airport Basestation that is at least 3 feet wide. Even Airport Extreme wouldn't need it that big.

    Just a sloppy PS hack.
