No matter what the new iBooks are, they will be in many ways subpar. The reason is because of the PM and the fact that many of its systems are still behind the curve. The iBook will be a product that Apple will have to intentionally cripple. They will have to cripple the video subsystem, the processor, the hard drive, the feature set, everything. They can not make it competitive with other consumer notebooks at the same price because then it would look too much like the PB. If they put the best availabe G3 in it, it would look much faster than the low end PB. The bad news is that I don't see this changing for the notebook line up for some time to come.
My gut also says that this is balls, but you've got to give the guy's observational skills a bit more credit than that. The fonts ARE the correct size -- he really hasn't missed a detail. And it's scaled down just enough to mask any funny business he might have had to pull with graphics.
If Apple is going to go G4 on the iBook, they're going to have to do something about cooling and battery life. A 42 watt hour battery and a fan that comes on once in a month of Sundays is not going to cut it with a G4 in the 12.1 inch iBook.
Personally, I'd still rather see an 800MHz (or more) G3 Sahara (with the 16MB Radeon Mobility so that they at least get SOME benefit from Quartz Extreme even if it isn't "optimal"). Lower-wattage, less messing around with the existing design.
But if they do have to mess around with the design, can they please fix the annoying tendency of the left handrest to heat up alarmingly right over the hard drive? The Powerbooks don't do this -- not even the previous versions and the new ones are unquestionably cooler running than the iBook all round, if the local Apple Store is anything to go by.
I have a bit of a hypothesis on this one. Of course, I am probably wrong, but it would sure be nice.. What I think is that the Powerbook is in its last revision. Sometime between now and Mwny (or at MWNY), I think Apple will announce a new Powerbook, and re-engineer the iBook. With 32 megs of ram, as it would be very effective for the Quartz Extreme. Then, on the Powerbook, something with 64 megs of ram. I am probably wrong on this, but it sure would be awesome...

Interesting. Remember the small posting in the right column on Friday saying that they would provide info on new iBooks over the weekend? They removed that on Monday. And now there's a full article about new iBooks. I just hope that Jaguar is faster for earlier iBooks (like my 500 Mhz with the lousy 66Mhz bus) despite lack of "Quartz Extreme" support.
If you look at the bottom, it says that it's in the "local machine zone" (the IE security zone for pages that are on your hard disk). The observant viewer will also note the absence of the ads and widgets at the bottom of the regular apple store pages. I bet that he/she edited an apple store page, loaded it up and then altered the location bar to make it appear that this page came from Apple. No photoshopping necessary.
On a plausibility note, when has Apple ever had 5
different models in a line (excluding build-to-order)?
In any case, I wouldn't complain if those were the new iBooks, but the picture is fake regardless of the specs

When the Titanium was 400/500, and the iBooks were all 500s, for example. There are other examples.
The person who took this alleged screenshot might have set his or her I.E. to display fonts at size 12 (Mac-normal) instead of 16 (Windowz-normal).
It could be legit.
