TiBook (Next revision questions)

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
1. When will the next revision occur?

2. Will it be incremental or major?

3. What will we most likely see updated if either incrementally or significantly revised?

I would like to see one updated from MWNY to September to coincide with the fall semester. Unrealistic?

this is a pretty major revision (with all the new features)....fairly unlikely we'll see an update before september.....

i think the next one will be a major revision. it will be about time. but the current ti800 is VERY good...i wouldn't be upset if i were to get one (unless it was updated the next week with 1.4 ghz g4)...go ahead and get it...

it would probably happen maybe november at the earliest.....who knows.....jump in and get a ti800

    3. processor speed, different case, form factor...aesthetic changes mostly

but who know....i'm probably %100 wrong

Except for processor and screen, the current TiBook comes in at a lower price. If Apple were to offer a 16.1 screen, I hope they would also offer the current 15.2 inch screen.

I don't know if there's a way to go 16.1 without changing the form factor. Anyway. . .

6 months is a good bet. Maybe a bit sooner, maybe a bit later. Here's my guess:

    -On board 802.11a and Bluetooth.

    -Faster Processor

    -Faster motherboard

Hard to beat the TiBook form, But I'm sure Jonny is working on something, down there in the basement.

So everyone seems to be predicting no updates in the near future, but I wonder: could a Superdrive come in like a gust of wind, giving a good deal to talk about at MWNY? ("Finally, a notebook we can PRODUCE viewable movies with!")

The 550/667 update in October was shortly followed by an optical drive change. This exemplifies the fact that Apple will not wait for "the right time" to update something, but will do it as things work out. With any luck, all you shmucks who go out and buy the new Ti800's will be able to swap out your measly combo drive with a Superdrive in a few months, for $299 or so.

Me, I'm still trying to figure out whether I'm one of those shmucks.

    Regards,

    PEte

PS - I think the reason <a href="http://www.appleturns.com"; target="_blank">appleturns.com is down is because they predicted Superdrives in the next revision, and they are hanging their heads in shame (or dodging molotov cocktails thrown by fanatic-Mac-addicts.)

This is so sad. Apple releases new hardware two days ago, and there is already someone asking "Is it safe to buy?" "When's the next one coming?" I mean really! I'd be pretty sure that nothing new will come for 4-6 months, so we're looking at September to November. Sorry, I'm afraid too late for fall semester. You gotta remember, it's the iBook and (now) eMac that are on the educational year. They don't have their pro lines revolving around the school semester.

    Why do I encourage this?

i checked those specs for the sony and it has a buss speed of 400 Mhz. the tibook is still at 133mhz. this is one of the reason i didn't buy the new ti and will wait until the buss speed has been improved. i have been waiting to buy one. the corrected the other reason i didn't buy (screen resolution). now they need to up the bus speed. Well, i dont' need it so i can wait. however, i am getting tired of waiting for apple to "catch-up".

Still, you must appreciate peoples' anxieties. With the price of the machines, and the spotty hardware roll-outs mac purchasers want to wring the most value possible from a purchase. It's a numbers game you never win (on any platform) but all the same, it's a problem of Apple's own making. Big waits, big shows, big dissapointments. They're trying to break that up with more non-expo updates and announcements, but untill we start seeing spec updates to all the machines every quarter, people will keep having cold feet about dropping 3000-5000 on a computer.

I didn't ask about purchasing information, I asked about the relevance, magnitude, and timing of the next update. This itself is relevant information whether a day after the last update or a day before the next one.

They can still release an update to the pro-line at MWNY or Seybold- just in time or around the start of the Fall Semester.

I think there will be another revision of the TiBook this year, and i think that the 1Ghz mark may be hit, together with bluetooth and DDR. It will prove to be an amazing PB. However i have waited too long now. Im getting a PB 800Mhz, you can't wait forever.

At somepoint apple will get on the ball with a firewire revision and a usb revision. Although I would not hold my breath.

I have not heard any speculation about DDR RAM which also is something that people are expecting in future versions of hardware.

As for timeline? who knows. My personal opinion is that this powerbook revision is the revision that should have happened in January. Remember that Apple is trying to keep the Pro / Consumer distinction. Keeping with this trend it would not shock me if our favorite fruit company continues to bump the pro line in lower profile events while using the major events to push the consumer line.

I dont agree with that. I think Apple needs to promote the arrival of newer and faster pro machines as much as possible.

My prediction -- if they can get G4 to work with DDR, and deal with remaining cooling problems.

September. 800/1GHz G4. DDR motherboard. Maybe a further increase in the screen density if OS X lives up to its promise with scaling fonts.

--if they can't work a viable DDR solution with G4 in the laptop.

August. 800/1GHz G4. A price cut. See above on screen density.

January. CPU that supports DDR, on 0.13 micron fab process. Maybe more price cuts if Sony and Dell keep on the heat.

What I would like to see? 15 to 20 percent speed bumps every four months. 0.13 micron in the next CPU update.

Is the current (April 29 DVI interface) TiBook adequate? It's really pretty good. It's the first TiBook in my opinion, maybe even the first Apple laptop, that qualifies as a desktop replacement. It's the first with really strong dual monitor support, the first that does not have a glaring graphic support deficiency compared to contemporary desktop, and the first with a built in mega-pixel display. And the best keyboard on an Apple laptop in three or four years.

But, also for the first time in a long time, Apple has some very serious laptop competition on the PC side at the pro end of the market. So they need to get moving on performance.
