Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
Anyone got some?

Supposedly it was flashed for a second up on the big screen. Did anyone manage to snap a pic?

Technically this is still future hardware (announced, but not yet released)

In lieu of pics, howzabout some MOCK-UPS?

Yeah, post your mock-ups here!

ModEdit: i changed the title.. Honesty in advertising. -robo

MatsuEdit: Message changed back to original form in lieu of Robo's own honest advertising in <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=001628"; target="_blank">this thread

I mean, come mods, you have to let the pleebs have some fun too.

roboEdit2: Yeah, but you didn't even have a fake to show for your dishonest title. My title was honest.. the information inside was not

[ 05-07-2002: Message edited by: robo ]

MatsuEdit2: Hey look it's the inline thread within a post within a thread, YAY! That's the kinda warped forum logic I can live with, so I added a few more question marks!

I am less interested in pics and mock-ups of a rackmount Apple server, than I am in what's INSIDE the box!!

You're alone on that one. Plenty of sysadmins are interested in how Apple could turn a rackmount into a thing of beauty, and maybe even revolutionize the usability of the rackmount case. Ever look at SGI's rackmounts? Cobalt's? Sun's? I can only imagine what Apple's would look like.

I'm going to throw together a mockup! I haven't done that in forever.

They are on a roll...but why did they leave the inkwell thread open that has the blatant misspelling in the title? GRR!

The register says there already had been pictures of them on the web.

For some reason I hope the case is not "Brushed Metal."

It's pretty big (I forgot what DPI I was working in and I was too lazy to shrink it down and then fix all the bits that would have ****ed up).. but yeah. My first halfway decent mockup. Maybe.

    Whew, that just took forever.

Looks nice, but what you're totally forgetting is that a rackmount doesn't need two speakers, in fact not even one. replace these holes with filtered air intakes and it's closer to it.

Nor do many racks even require removable media...

heh you could excuse it by argumenting that it's just a cover for an LCD status display and the power button and USB jacks or so

The "Admin panel", so to say

    bradley...

That's pretty enough to be the pizzabox people have always wanted.

Imagine walking into a giant room filled with the barely perceptible humming of hundreds of those silent icy cool boxes with only pulsating LED's to hint at their activity.

Suddenly I feel like superman in his arctic ice fortress. Cool.

I don't think I am alone on this. I didn't say I wasn't interested at all in how they look, just that I am much more interested in that 2GHz G5 that's in it!

Yes, a fast engine for new machines is most important, but I'm thinking about, what will the dang thing look like? Just for kicks, to see how close we can get to Apple's design team. Where are these pics 'already on the net' ???

My guess is a titanium Powerbook look. Twice the thickness minus the battery and the LCD (obviously) and using a PM variant of the MoBo, not PB one. 1 PCI slot, PPC's with 2MB or more cache on daugthercards, standard I/O -- Gb ethernet at least, maybe faster firewire. Hot swap drives? Yes but not exactly directly accessible. The whole case will act like a desk drawer: it will slide out from the front revealing 2-3 hot-plug drives just behind a smooth (doorless) fascia. Slide out a little further and you get to the PCI card and PPC. A custom ribbon at the back keeps the MoBo from yanking out all your rear panel connections when you open her up.

I like the icy white look, but I don't think that's how she's gonna turn out.

    _________________

Fears: new Ti has decent caches and Apple is going to make a very low power server based on this MoBo instead. Cache and proc limited to on board soldered elements. Only RAM expansion, otherwie completely sealed, all I/O even the disk controllers are built in and not upgradeable.

PS: Maybe airport for easy network administration, just walk up to an afflicted machine with your PB and go to work on it, no reaching around the rack, no fumbling for cords, etc... Not really neccessary, possibly a giant gaping security hole. But, if anyone can find a way to make it work... I'm not expecting it, but it's possible.

i can see why this would take forever for someone with no imagination. i guess it was hard to copy and paste new "emac's" front cover and blend the top off. perhaps that's just my guess. but apple's hardwares do resemble one another (i.e. powerbook and ibook, and so on) and maybe that's your take. i would take more time to do research, and see what functions of a server needs, etc. before doing one of those "wow, i did my first copy and pasted "computer mock-up." i would re do and try to be more imaginative. (keep in mind of suggestions of other members above) i guess you have lots of room to improve, this being your first "half way decent mockup" as you call it. one thumb up for trying.... :-)

Why the hell would the rack have speakers? Smokin the whacky tebackey are we? And it looks like 'Nice Rick." I do think Apple should use "nice rack" though. Good try though bradbower, at least you did a mockup.

Be honest. How many people came to this thread because -- judging from the title -- they thought it contained actual pictures.

Matsu, I'm probably just being a pain but I would have titled it "Where are the Rack-mount Pics?" Or, at the very least, use the same title, but replace "!!!" with "??"

Yea... I'm just being a pain.
