White with chrome? I guess we have an idea on the next case design for the PowerMac case.

It may be brushed alu, that would look like white on that short of shot (remember this is a pic of a slide of the rackmount)

I hope that the next PM case isn't the same white as the New iMac.

Looks like 2U. Are those two bottom sections panels i.e. removable faceplates?

Hmm. Certainly hope it doesn't cost a horrendous amount. I'd love to get one at work to keep all the accounting and customer database files on instead of separate computers (sneaker-net lives on!).

I wonder if all those little round holes are status LEDs. I loves them blinky lights!

I think they are. The ones on the bottom would be for the RAID set up while the ones on the top would be for general status.

First impression: This does not look like an Ive's design... quite ugly.

But I'm really looking forward to the 14th to hear/see what's under the hood.

What's ugly about it? Have you seen the best that Compaq and Dell have out there?

It's quite a nice change from what I'm used to seeing on the farms.

I have seen their desktop/mobile hardware, too, thus I don't expect much of them.

It's a question of personal preference anyways, but compared to the TiBook, for example, this design doesn't blow me away.

But in a well designed product form follows function and it's the details that I love about Apple's products. And I can't see what this design is about but we'll find it out come tuesday.

I can't believe someone would actually complain about the design of a rackmount server (appearance wise that is). Will the madness ever end?

I think the actual "server" or clusternode is 1U. its the one on top. the 2U thing underneath it is probably a separate disc unit.

Well ... it's not exacly beautiful. That said, most likey the people who would complain are the people who wouldn't use them (like me). I guess we're just spoiled with how beautiful the rest of the mac product line looks. Ohwell (since I'll never use one) the only thing I really care about is insides (so I can figure out what'll most likley be in the PM's come MWNY).

It's function is that it sits in a rack in a cage you'll never see, or a closet you likely won't have keys to. Have you been in a server center before? The fact that it's metal and has an apple logo on it will make it the most beautiful thing in the cage immediately. (Although some of Compaq's later racks have been pretty smooth looking, too... not the rackmounts - the racks themselves)

With the exception of a rackmount SGI, these will be the nicer looking rackmounts out there... this is as pretty as it gets, folks. You have to not think about showing off the sweet curves on your desktop and think of the larger curves of 12 racks full of these humming along... a wall of Apple hiding in a cage you only show to your biggest clients so they'll know where all their money is going

My guess, BTW, is that the server itself is the 1u Unit atop a larger RAID mount, as suggested. Easy enough for AAPL to grab a filed-tested RAID mount and attach a matching faceplate for branding... and shifts some of the costs around.

My gut feeling is that the picture itself is intentionally non-revealving, in the sense that I bet the front bows out a bit - would explain some of the highlighting, and make all out you desktop-style fiends calm down a bit.

You think that's a picture of two separate units? I can't see it really, the horizontal gap between the top/bottom looks the same as the vertical gap between the lower left and lower right. If it's two units it would make the top unit about 2/3U and the bottom 1 1/3U - which is completely senseless!?

Hello. I can verify the authenticity of that photo.

Just a note that when the slide went up, it was a pic of just the center (?) of the rack... it is cut off at the sides.

I was being sarcastic. We can't have a picture posted on the AI boards without several claims that the photo is a fake (of course it usually is one)
